How to Tag Someone on LinkedIn in Posts, Comments and Photos

To tag someone on LinkedIn, type @ in a post or comment, start typing their name and pick them from the list; for photos, click Tag when you add the image and click on the person. You don't need to be connected, but if someone has switched mentions off, LinkedIn won't let you tag them.

Tagging is one of the simplest ways to make a LinkedIn post travel further. Thank a client by name, credit the speaker whose talk inspired you, or show off the team behind a project, and those people get a nudge to come and see it. Done well, it's generous and it builds relationships. Done badly, it looks like you're fishing for attention.

LinkedIn has two separate ways to do it: mentions, where you type @ and a name in your text, and photo tags, where you pin a name on a picture. I'll show you both, on a computer and on your phone, then cover notifications, settings and a bit of etiquette. Everything follows LinkedIn's Help Center articles on mentions, photo tags and tag visibility.

Two ways to tag someone on LinkedIn

MethodWhere it worksWhat it does
@mentionPosts and commentsTurns the name into a link and notifies them
Photo tagImages you share in a postLinks the person to that photo and notifies them

How to mention someone in a LinkedIn post on a computer

  1. From your homepage, click Start a post.
  2. Type @ and start typing the person's name. Suggestions appear as you type.
  3. If it's a common name, add their company after it so the right person shows up.
  4. Click the correct name in the list. It turns into a link in your text.
  5. Keep writing, then click Post.

The same @ trick works in comments. Click Comment under any post, type @ and the name, pick them from the list and post your comment.

Mentioning someone on LinkedIn from your phone

  1. Tap Post in the navigation bar.
  2. Tap the @ key on your keyboard and start typing the name.
  3. Add their company if lots of people share that name.
  4. Tap the person in the suggestions, then finish your post.
  5. Tap Post.

Forgot someone? LinkedIn says you can edit a post or comment later to add a mention.

How to tag people in a photo on LinkedIn

On a computer:

  1. Click Photo in the share box at the top of your homepage.
  2. Choose your images. You can add up to 9 in one post.
  3. In the Edit your photo window, click Tag, then click the part of the photo where the person is.
  4. Type their name and click it to add the tag. Repeat for anyone else.
  5. Add alt text if you like, so people using screen readers know what's in the picture, then click Done.
  6. Write your post, choose who can see it and click Post.

In the app, tap Post, take a photo or pick up to 9 from your gallery, tap the Tag icon, tap the photo, type the name and tap it. Then tap Next, add your text, choose who can see it from the Anyone dropdown and tap Post.

LinkedIn allows up to 30 people to be tagged in a single photo, which is plenty for a team shot or an event picture.

Do you need to be connected to tag someone on LinkedIn?

No. LinkedIn's help says members don't need to be your connection for you to mention or tag them. There's a caveat, though: LinkedIn may limit your ability to mention people you aren't connected with, to keep things safe and professional.

If a name simply won't come up, it may be that the person has switched mentions off. LinkedIn will tell you that member can't be mentioned.

What the person you tag on LinkedIn sees

Once your post goes live, the person you mentioned gets an app notification and an email. Photo tags work the same way, unless the member has turned that notification off.

Tags aren't set in stone either. As the author, you can remove tags after posting. And if someone tags you, you can remove the tag of yourself from their post.

Stop people tagging you on LinkedIn

If you'd rather not be tagged at all, there's a setting for it:

  1. Click the Me icon and choose Settings & Privacy (on the app, tap your photo, then Settings & Privacy).
  2. Go to Visibility.
  3. Open Mentions, tags, and collaborations.
  4. Switch off Allow mentions, tags, and collaborations.

LinkedIn says this stops people mentioning or tagging you in new posts, comments and photos, and from collaborating with you on posts. Existing mentions and tags stay where they are, so you'd remove those one by one.

Tagging on LinkedIn for small businesses and creators

I'm a big fan of tagging when it's about the other person. Credit a collaborator, thank a client who's happy to be named, or share what you learnt from someone's talk. What I'd avoid is tagging ten people who've got nothing to do with your post just to get eyeballs. People notice, and it chips away at the trust you're building.

A good rule: only tag people who'd be glad to be included, and say why in the post itself. If you're stuck for ideas, my LinkedIn post prompts for ChatGPT can help you get a first draft going, though I'd always rewrite it in your own words, and I've explained why in why I stopped batch-writing LinkedIn posts with AI. If you can't tag someone on LinkedIn

  1. Name doesn't appear: add their company to the search, or check the spelling.
  2. LinkedIn says they can't be mentioned: they've turned mentions off, and there's no way round it.
  3. Mentioning lots of non-connections: LinkedIn may limit this, so focus on the people who matter.
  4. Photo tag option missing: make sure you're adding the image through Photo in a new post.
