DeepSeek Prompts: Copy and Paste Ideas for Reasoning and Coding

These DeepSeek prompts help with step-by-step reasoning, coding, writing and learning. Copy one, swap the [brackets] for your details, and check the answer before you rely on it. DeepSeek's docs say thinking mode is on by default, so ask for clear steps and a clear finish line.

DeepSeek gets plenty of attention because it's good at working through a problem step by step. I'll be straight about one thing: DeepSeek's own documentation is written for developers and doesn't hand out prompt-writing advice. So the prompts here are my own, built around the way a reasoning model behaves, and they're not a copy of any official list.

Copy a prompt, swap the [brackets] for your details, and paste it into DeepSeek. Treat what comes back as a draft to check, especially numbers and code. Don't paste passwords, API keys, customer records or anything confidential, and read any code carefully before you run it. If you're comparing tools, my guide to the best AI coding assistants for business is worth a look.

DeepSeek prompts for reasoning and problem-solving

DeepSeek's docs say its thinking mode is on by default and returns the reasoning separately from the final answer. These prompts lean on that by asking for clear steps.

Work through a decision

Copy this prompt

I'm deciding between [option one] and [option two] for [situation]. List what matters, weigh each option against it step by step, then give a clear recommendation and the biggest risk.

Check my logic

Copy this prompt

Here's my reasoning: [paste your argument]. Go through it one step at a time, point out any step that doesn't follow, and rewrite the argument so it holds up.

Break a big goal into steps

Copy this prompt

My goal is [goal] by [date]. Break it into stages, list what could go wrong in each, and tell me what to do first this week.

Solve it two ways

Copy this prompt

Solve this problem two different ways and compare the answers. If they differ, work out which one is right and explain why: [problem].

Explain the trade-offs

Copy this prompt

Explain the trade-offs between [approach one] and [approach two] for someone who runs a small business. Use plain language and one everyday example for each.

DeepSeek prompts for coding help

DeepSeek's API is compatible with common developer tools, which is why many people use it for code. Always review what it writes.

Explain code line by line

Copy this prompt

Explain this code to a beginner, section by section, saying what each part does and why it's there: [paste code with no secrets in it].

Find the bug

Copy this prompt

This [language] code should [expected behaviour] but instead [what happens]. Walk through it step by step, name the bug and show a corrected version with the changes marked.

Write a small script

Copy this prompt

Write a short [language] script that [task]. Add comments, explain how to run it, and list anything I should check before trusting the result.

Suggest tests

Copy this prompt

List the tests I should write for this function, including awkward cases like empty input and very long text. Write the first three: [paste function].

Make code easier to read

Copy this prompt

Tidy this code so it's easier for another person to read, without changing what it does. Show a short list of what you changed and why: [paste code].

DeepSeek prompts for writing and editing

Reasoning models can over-explain, so tell DeepSeek the length and the voice you want.

Draft an email

Copy this prompt

Write a short, friendly email to [who] about [topic]. My goal is [goal], the tone is [warm and direct], and it should be no longer than [number] sentences.

Tighten my draft

Copy this prompt

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Edit my draft to make it shorter and clearer without changing my meaning. Keep my voice and show the result first, then a short list of what you cut: [paste draft].

Create an outline

Copy this prompt

Make an outline for an article called [title] aimed at [audience]. Give me a short heading for each section and one line saying what it should cover.

Rewrite for a different reader

Copy this prompt

Rewrite this for [new audience, for example busy managers or complete beginners]. Keep the facts the same and change the examples and the level of detail: [paste text].

Generate headline options

Copy this prompt

Give me ten possible headlines for [topic]. Make some practical, some curious, and mark the two you think are strongest and why.

DeepSeek prompts for research and learning

Always check facts against a reliable source, because any AI can state something confidently and be wrong.

Teach me a topic

Copy this prompt

Teach me the basics of [topic] in five steps, with one simple example for each step and a short quiz at the end to test what I've understood.

Summarise long text

Copy this prompt

Summarise the text below in five bullet points, then list any claims that should be checked against a reliable source: [paste text].

Compare two ideas

Copy this prompt

Compare [idea one] and [idea two] in a short table covering what each is, who it suits, and the main drawback. Then explain the difference in two sentences.

Prepare for a conversation

Copy this prompt

I've got a meeting with [who] about [topic]. List the questions they're likely to ask, the objections I should expect, and a calm one-line answer I can give to each.

Create a study plan

Copy this prompt

Build a [number]-week study plan for learning [skill], with about [number] minutes a day, a simple weekly goal, and a way to check my progress.

How to get better results from DeepSeek prompts

  • Be clear about the finish line. Say what a good answer looks like, such as steps, a table or a short list.
  • Let the thinking happen. DeepSeek's docs say thinking mode is on by default, so you rarely need to say "think step by step", though asking for numbered steps helps you check the work.
  • Don't rely on creativity settings. The docs say temperature and similar settings have no effect in thinking mode, so change your wording instead.
  • Check the answer, not just the reasoning. A tidy chain of steps can still end somewhere wrong.
  • Keep sensitive details out of the chat, and read code before you run it.

A last word on trust. A reasoning model sounds sure of itself even when it's wrong, and a long, tidy explanation can make a shaky answer feel solid. Whenever the stakes are real, whether that's a client deliverable, a legal point or code that touches customer data, use DeepSeek to get to a first draft quickly and then check the result against a source you trust before it goes anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

What are DeepSeek prompts?

They're the messages you give DeepSeek to get an answer, a draft or some code. Because it's a reasoning model, prompts that state the goal and the shape of the answer tend to work well.

Does DeepSeek publish official prompt advice?

Its documentation is aimed at developers and I couldn't find consumer prompt-writing guidance in it, so the prompts and tips here are my own.

What does thinking mode mean?

DeepSeek's docs say thinking mode is on by default and the model's reasoning is returned separately from the final answer.

Can I use these prompts for coding?

Yes, but review the code before running it and never paste secrets, API keys or private data into the chat.

Are DeepSeek's answers always right?

No. Check facts, numbers and code against a reliable source before you rely on them.
