How to Add Friends on Spotify: Find, Follow, Manage and Block

To add friends on Spotify, search their name, choose Profiles from the filters under the search bar, and tap or click Follow on their profile. Spotify calls it following, and you can also ask them to send you a link to their profile.

Spotify's help page doesn't talk about friend requests. It talks about following. I've answered the questions people ask most, using Spotify's own help page on following friends and managing followers, which I checked as of Nov 2026.

How do I find someone and follow them?

Search for their name, then filter the results so you're only looking at people. Spotify's steps:

  1. Go to Search and type the person's name.
  2. On mobile, tap enter so the filters appear.
  3. Choose Profiles from the filters below the search bar.
  4. Open their profile and tap or click Follow.

That Profiles filter is the bit people miss. Without it, a common name drowns in songs, artists and podcasts. If they're still hard to find, Spotify's other suggestion is the simplest: ask them to share a link to their profile with you. One tap on the link and you're on the right page. It works the other way too: Spotify's help page on sharing says you can share your profile from the app, so you can send them yours.

What do I get from following a friend?

Spotify says following friends lets you see what they're listening to in Listening Activity. That's the main payoff. If you'd like to go further and build something together, a shared playlist is the natural next step, and I've explained setting up a playlist you both add to. For listening at the same time, have a look at how Spotify Jam works.

Where can I see who follows me?

Spotify gives different steps for each device:

  • Phone or tablet: tap your profile picture, tap View profile, then tap followers under your profile name.
  • Desktop: click your profile picture at the top, select Profile, then click Followers under your profile name.

If you're also curious who follows a particular playlist, that's a slightly different question, and my guide on checking playlist followers covers it.

Can I remove a follower without blocking them?

Yes, but only from the mobile app. On your followers list, tap the three-dot icon next to the person and choose Remove follower. Spotify's page is clear that they can follow you back again afterwards, so treat it as a quiet tidy-up, not a barrier.

On desktop you can right-click a follower to follow or block them, but Spotify notes that removing followers and reaching the blocked list only work in the mobile app. If you're on a laptop and the option isn't there, that's why.

How do I block someone on Spotify?

Blocking is the firmer option. According to Spotify's help page on followers, a blocked person can't follow you or your playlists, and can't see your profile or your listening activity.

  • Mobile: go to their profile, tap the three-dot icon, and choose block.
  • Desktop: go to their profile, click the three-dot icon, and choose Block.

My view: if someone makes you uneasy, block rather than remove. Removing lets them straight back in.

Work with me

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Remove or block: which one do I want?

Spotify's page treats these as two different strengths, and it helps to see them side by side. Remove follower takes someone off your followers list, and Spotify says they can follow you back again. Block is described as a way to permanently remove and block them: they can't follow you or your playlists, and they can't see your profile or listening activity.

There's a device difference too. Removing a follower only works in the mobile app, and so does the blocked list. Blocking itself works from a profile on mobile or desktop. So if you're at your computer and want someone gone for good, block works there. If you only want a quiet tidy-up, pick up your phone.

Where's my blocked list, and how do I unblock?

On mobile, tap your profile picture, then Settings and privacy, then Privacy and social. Under Profile visibility, open Blocked users and tap Unblock next to the person. You can also unblock from their profile through the same three-dot icon you used to block them, on mobile or desktop.

What won't the help page tell me?

Here's where Spotify's article stops, as of Nov 2026:

  • Whether the other person gets notified when you follow them.
  • Any limit on how many people you can follow or how many can follow you.
  • Finding friends through your contacts or Facebook. The page only lists "Logging in to Spotify with Facebook" as a related article title, nothing more.

I won't guess at those. What the page does cover, it covers clearly, and that's enough to find your friends and keep control of who sees your listening.
