Why won't the Twitter (X) videos play now on iphone? The Straight Answer for X in 2026

X (formerly Twitter) videos usually won't play on iPhone because of a poor connection, an outdated app or iOS version, cached data gone wrong, or Low Power Mode blocking background processes. Try reconnecting to wifi, updating the X app and iOS, clearing the app cache, restarting your phone, and checking Settings to allow X to use mobile data and background refresh.

Why this is happening now

If X (formerly Twitter) videos were playing fine before and have suddenly stopped, something has changed, either on your phone, in the app, or with X itself. It is rarely one single cause. I will walk through the usual suspects in order, starting with the easiest fixes.

There is no need to panic or reinstall everything straight away. Most of the time this comes down to a connection issue, an app that needs updating, or a setting that is quietly blocking video playback.

Check your connection first

Video needs a steady connection to stream. If you are on patchy wifi or weak mobile signal, the video might load the thumbnail but never play.

Switch between wifi and mobile data to see if one works better than the other. If you are on mobile data, check you have not hit a data cap that is throttling your speed.

  1. Turn wifi off and try mobile data
  2. Turn mobile data off and try wifi
  3. Move closer to your router if using wifi
  4. Restart your router if the connection seems slow everywhere

Update the X app

An outdated app is one of the most common reasons video stops working. X updates fairly often, and if you have not opened the App Store in a while, you could be several versions behind.

Go to the App Store, tap your profile icon, and scroll down to see pending updates. If X is listed, update it. This alone fixes the problem for a lot of people.

Update iOS

The X app is built to work with certain versions of iOS. If your phone's software is out of date, the app may not behave as it should, including video playback.

Go to Settings, then General, then Software Update. If there is an update available, install it. Make sure your phone is charged or plugged in first, since this can take a while.

Clear the app's cache

Over time, the X app stores temporary data to help things load faster. Sometimes this cache gets corrupted and causes playback problems rather than solving them.

There is no dedicated cache clearing button inside the X app itself. The most reliable way to clear it on iPhone is to delete the app and reinstall it.

  1. Press and hold the X app icon
  2. Tap Remove App, then Delete App
  3. Go to the App Store and reinstall X
  4. Log back in and test a video

This will log you out, so make sure you remember your password before you do this.

Check your phone's settings

A few settings on your iPhone can quietly stop videos from playing, even when the app and connection are fine.

Low Power Mode is a common culprit. It reduces background activity to save battery, and this can interfere with video loading. Go to Settings, then Battery, and turn off Low Power Mode if it is on.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Also check that X has permission to use mobile data. Go to Settings, scroll to X, and make sure Mobile Data is switched on. While you are there, check Background App Refresh is enabled too, since this can affect how content loads within the app.

Restart your iPhone

This sounds basic, but a full restart clears out small glitches that build up over time and can affect how apps run, including video playback.

Hold the side button and either volume button until the slider appears, then slide to power off. Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. Open X again and test a video before trying anything more complicated.

What to do if nothing works

If you have gone through all of the above and videos still will not play, the issue may be on X's side rather than your phone. This happens from time to time, particularly during periods of high traffic or after a platform update.

Check if friends or colleagues on other devices are having the same problem. If they are, it is likely not something you can fix from your end, and you will need to wait it out.

I cannot tell you exactly when X will resolve a server side issue, and I will not pretend there is a guaranteed fix for that. If the problem is only happening with specific videos rather than all of them, it is possible the video itself was removed or set to limited availability by the person who posted it, which is also outside your control.

Frequently asked questions

Why have X videos suddenly stopped playing on my iPhone?

It is usually a connection problem, an outdated app or iOS version, a corrupted cache, or Low Power Mode blocking background activity. Work through these one at a time rather than assuming it is one single cause.

Will deleting and reinstalling the X app fix video playback?

Often, yes. Reinstalling clears the app's cache completely, which resolves many playback issues. You will need to log back in afterwards, so make sure you know your password first.

Does Low Power Mode stop videos playing on iPhone?

It can. Low Power Mode reduces background processes to save battery, which sometimes interferes with video loading in apps like X. Turn it off in Settings, then Battery, and test again.

What if videos still won't play after trying everything?

The issue may be on X's side rather than your phone. Check if others are having the same problem. If they are, there is nothing more you can do except wait for X to resolve it.
