Twitter (X) videos stop playing after a few seconds: Every Fix in Order for X (Twitter), 2026

Videos on X (formerly Twitter) usually stop after a few seconds because of a poor connection, a browser cache problem, or app issues. Try switching wifi to mobile data, clear your browser cache, update the app, and disable extensions. If it still fails, the video file itself may be broken on X's end.

Why this keeps happening on X (formerly Twitter)

I've had this happen more times than I'd like to admit. You're scrolling through your feed, a video starts, and then it freezes or stops after two or three seconds. It's annoying, but it's rarely anything serious.

Most of the time it comes down to one of a few things: a weak internet connection, a build up of cache data, an outdated app, or something interfering in your browser. Sometimes it's simply X having a bad day with their video servers.

I've gone through every fix I know of, in the order I'd try them. Start at the top and work down.

Check your connection first

This sounds obvious, but it's the most common cause. If your wifi is patchy or you're on slow mobile data, videos will buffer, stutter, or stop completely.

Try switching from wifi to mobile data, or the other way round. Run a quick speed test if you have one installed. If your speed is well below what it normally is, that's likely your answer.

If you're on a shared network, like at work or in a café, ask if others are having slow speeds too. Sometimes the problem isn't you at all.

Restart the app or refresh the page

Before you do anything more involved, just close the app fully and reopen it. On desktop, refresh the page or close the tab and open a new one.

This clears out any temporary glitch without touching your settings or data. It fixes the problem more often than you'd expect.

Clear your cache and cookies

If restarting didn't help, the next step is clearing your browser's cache. Over time, stored data can conflict with how videos load, especially after X has updated something on their end.

  1. Open your browser settings
  2. Find the privacy or history section
  3. Choose to clear cached images and files
  4. Leave passwords and bookmarks untouched unless you want to clear those too
  5. Restart the browser and try the video again

On the X app, you can usually find a similar option under settings, data usage, or storage. Clearing it won't delete your account data, just temporary files.

Update the app or browser

An outdated app is a common cause of video playback problems. X regularly pushes updates, and if you're a few versions behind, things can break in small ways like this.

Check your app store for pending updates. On desktop, make sure your browser is on the latest version too. Old browser versions sometimes don't support the video format X is using.

If you're using a browser that's no longer widely supported, like an old version of Internet Explorer or an unmaintained fork, that could be the whole issue.

Disable browser extensions

Ad blockers, privacy tools, and script blockers can all interfere with video players embedded on websites. I've seen ad blockers in particular stop videos dead after a few seconds because they block part of the script that keeps the stream running.

Try disabling your extensions one at a time, or open the site in an incognito or private window where extensions are usually switched off by default.

If the video plays fine in private mode, you've found your culprit. You can then either whitelist X specifically or find a less aggressive alternative.

Try a different browser or device

If none of the above has worked, try opening X in a completely different browser. If you normally use Chrome, try Firefox or Edge. If the video plays there, the issue is specific to your original browser's settings or configuration.

Similarly, try a different device if you have one handy, like switching from your laptop to your phone. This helps you work out whether the problem is with your setup or something wider.

If it fails everywhere, across devices and browsers, the issue probably isn't on your end at all.

When it's X's problem, not yours

Sometimes a video simply won't play because the file itself is corrupted or wasn't processed correctly when it was uploaded. This happens on X occasionally, particularly with longer videos or ones uploaded during periods of high traffic.

There's no fix for this from your side. You can't repair a broken video file that someone else posted. If you suspect this is the case, try opening the same post on a different device to confirm it's not just you, and if it still fails everywhere, it's simply down to the file.

I'd also check X's official status page or support accounts if a lot of videos are failing at once. Wider outages do happen, and when they do, there's nothing to do but wait it out.

A quick checklist to keep handy

When this happens again, and it probably will, work through these steps in order rather than jumping around:

  1. Check your internet connection and switch networks if needed
  2. Restart the app or refresh the page
  3. Clear your browser cache and cookies
  4. Update your app or browser to the latest version
  5. Disable extensions or try a private browsing window
  6. Test on a different browser or device

If you've done all of this and it still won't play, it's most likely a problem with the specific video file or a temporary issue on X's end. At that point, there's nothing more you can do except try again later.

Frequently asked questions

Why do X videos stop playing after a few seconds?

It's usually a weak connection, cached browser data, an outdated app, or an interfering extension. Occasionally the video file itself is broken and there's nothing you can do about it from your end.

Does clearing cache fix X video playback issues?

Often, yes. Cached files can conflict with how X loads video content, especially after an update. Clearing your browser or app cache removes the old data and lets the page load fresh.

Could my ad blocker be stopping videos from playing?

Yes, ad blockers and privacy extensions can interfere with video scripts on X. Try disabling them or opening the page in a private browsing window to see if the video plays.

What if the video still won't play after trying everything?

Then the problem is likely with the video file itself or a wider issue on X's servers. This can't be fixed from your side, so the only option is to wait and try again later.
