The best GIF editor depends on what you want to do to a GIF you already have. One-action pages resize, crop or reverse it, all-in-one editors put text, speed, crop and frame tools in one place, and a command-line tool edits individual frames. Pick the edit you need first, then the tool.
You've got a GIF that's nearly right: too wide for the post, playing the wrong way round, or missing a caption. Search 'GIF editor' and you'll get tools that each fix a different part of that.
This list covers ten GIF editors, using only what each maker's own page says, read on 2 Nov 2026 (as of Nov 2026). It's alphabetical and in no particular order. It's about editing a GIF you already have, so you won't find shrinking file sizes or turning video into GIFs here.

One-action pages, all-in-one editors and a frame tool
Here's the split a searcher wouldn't guess. ezgif can 'create, edit and convert gif, apng, webp, mng, jxl and avif animations'. GIFGIFs lists GIF Resizer, GIF Crop, GIF Reverser and Split GIF as separate tools. GIFCrop crops a GIF online 'in your browser', and Gifsicle edits animations by 'replacing, deleting, or inserting frames' from the command line. So 'GIF editor' means three different things, and they don't replace each other.
- One-action pages: one job per page, such as resize, crop or reverse.
- All-in-one editors: many edits on one site, from text to speed to animation effects.
- A frame-level tool: a command-line program that changes individual frames.
Resizing a GIF for the place it's going
Five tools here list a GIF resizer. One page is built to change the size of an animated GIF online so you can resize a GIF for any platform or use case. Another resizes a GIF and changes its aspect ratio for Instagram, YouTube and other social media, with options to cut parts, add stickers or add text.
A browser GIF toolbox is listed through its resize page, with separate tools to crop a GIF, reverse a GIF, change GIF speed and play a GIF frame by frame. If you know the post size you need, start with one of these.
Cropping, reversing and changing speed
For a crop, one site is built around it: upload one GIF, crop it to a circle or square, adjust the zoom and move the crop window. Its menu also lists split, rotate, speed and reverse tools, so a loop can be cropped and flipped in one visit.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
A GIF tools site with a library of animations keeps each action on its own page, including Add Text to GIF and Rotate GIF beside its resizer, cropper and reverser. A GIF maker page puts add text, crop, rotate and reverse GIF together, with settings for speed and play count.
All-in-one editors and a frame-level command line
Two editors put many edits under one roof. One site handles GIF, APNG, WebP, MNG, JXL and AVIF animations, and its news section says its add text tool, in local processing mode, can now load your own custom fonts from your device. A photo editor has a GIF animation editor with animation effects, inside a long menu of other edits.
Building a GIF from scratch is a different job: one animated GIF generator takes pictures uploaded from a computer, a URL or a webcam and turns them into an animation.
The command-line tool is for people comfortable in a terminal. It creates, edits and gets information about GIF images and animations, can edit by replacing, deleting or inserting frames, and prints detailed information about GIFs, including comments.
Questions before you edit a GIF
- What's wrong with the GIF: size, shape, direction, speed or missing text?
- Where am I posting it, and what size or aspect ratio does that need?
- Do I need one edit or several?
- Is my file a GIF, or an APNG or WebP animation?
- Do I need to change individual frames?
- Am I starting from a set of pictures rather than a GIF?

My advice on editing a GIF
Name the one thing you want to change. For a single fix, a one-action page is the simplest place to start. For several edits in a row, an all-in-one editor saves hopping between sites. For frame-level changes or scripted edits, the command-line tool is the one built for it.
