The best YouTube transcript generator depends on how you want the text. Paste-a-link tools return a transcript for one video, browser extensions show it beside the video while you watch, batch tools handle whole playlists, and APIs let developers pull transcripts from code. Pick the job first, then the tool.
You've found the perfect hour-long interview on YouTube and you'd rather skim it than sit through it. Or you need a quote from a lecture, word for word. Either way, what you want is the text, and there's more than one way to get it.
This list covers ten transcript tools, using only what each maker's own website says, read on 2 Nov 2026 (as of Nov 2026). It's alphabetical and in no particular order. It's only about pulling transcripts from YouTube videos: transcribing your own meetings and audio files is a different job.

Four jobs hiding behind one search
Here's the split a searcher wouldn't guess: 'YouTube transcript generator' covers four different jobs. One is a single pasted link. Another is a browser extension that shows the transcript beside the video. A third is whole playlists in a batch, and the fourth is an API for developers. The tools differ by job more than by what they hand back.
Tactiq's page shows the paste-a-link job: copy the URL, paste it, then 'view, copy and download the YouTube video's transcript text'. NoteGPT shows the batch job, offering to 'batch transcribe YouTube videos and playlists'.
- One pasted link: a transcript for a single video.
- An extension: the transcript sits beside the video while you watch.
- A batch: several videos or a whole playlist at once.
- An API: transcripts pulled by your own code.
Try YouTube's own transcript button first
One vendor's FAQ points out something worth trying before any tool: on YouTube, click the three dots below the video, next to the Share and Save buttons, and select Show transcript. The same page notes the transcript might not be available for every video.
That's where these tools earn their place: when you want the text copied, downloaded, batched or pulled by code, or when the video doesn't offer one. One tool here says even videos without transcripts can be transcribed with its AI.

Paste a link, or keep an extension open
ScreenApp's page says to 'paste a YouTube link and get a transcript with speaker labels and timestamps'. Another tool turns a pasted video URL into a timestamped transcript you can edit, and one generates the text after you paste the link and click Get Transcript.
If you watch a lot of YouTube for research, an extension saves the pasting. One offers 'the transcript beside every video you watch', and another lets you get the transcript without leaving YouTube, with a one-click copy button and an embedded player where clicking a line jumps to that part of the video.
Playlists, APIs and podcast workflows
Supadata sells a YouTube transcript API, and its page shows a request with a video URL and an API key returning text with time offsets. One transcript site here links to its own API as well, so developers have more than one route.
Podsqueeze lists 'YouTube video transcripts' beside podcast transcripts, with an SRT file for subtitles and show notes. And Descript's steps start with uploading your video file into a project, so it fits your own uploads rather than someone else's link.
Questions before you paste a YouTube link
- Do I need one video, or a whole playlist?
- Do I want the transcript beside the video while I watch?
- Do I need speaker labels or timestamps?
- Which file do I need: plain text, a document or an SRT subtitle file?
- Am I transcribing my own upload or someone else's video?
- Will a developer call this from code?

My advice on YouTube transcript tools
Start with YouTube's own Show transcript option, because it's already there. If it's missing or you want the text in a file, a paste-a-link tool is the quickest fix. If you watch YouTube for research every day, install an extension. If you're working through a whole channel or playlist, use a batch tool, and if it's going into an app, use an API.
If you'd like the steps with screenshots, my guide to getting a YouTube video transcript walks you through it. And if you're turning your own videos into text, read how AI auto captions and translations fit into a content strategy.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a YouTube transcript without a tool?
Sometimes. One vendor's FAQ says to click the three dots below a video, next to the Share and Save buttons, and select Show transcript, and it notes the transcript might not be available for every video.
Which of these tools work from a pasted link?
Several. One returns a transcript with speaker labels and timestamps from a YouTube link, one lets you paste a URL and then view, copy and download the text, one turns a pasted video URL into a timestamped transcript, and one generates a transcript after you paste the link.
Can I transcribe a whole YouTube playlist?
One tool here says it can batch transcribe YouTube videos and playlists, and you can download or copy the result with or without timestamps.
Is there a YouTube transcript API?
Yes. One entry is a YouTube transcript API for developers that returns timestamped text, and another transcript site links to its own API.
Which tools show the transcript beside the video?
Two extensions here do. One adds the transcript beside every video you watch, and another lets you get the transcript without leaving YouTube. One site also shows an embedded player beside the text, where clicking a line jumps to that part of the video.
Can I export a YouTube transcript as subtitles?
On some tools, yes. One lists SRT and VTT among its exports, a podcast tool lists an SRT file for subtitles, and a video editor exports transcripts as text files or a subtitle file.
