Universal Credit: Who Can Claim, What You Get and When It's Paid

Universal Credit is a monthly UK payment to help with living costs if you're on a low income, out of work or can't work. As of Nov 2026, GOV.UK lists a monthly standard allowance of 338.58 to 666.97 pounds depending on age and whether you live with a partner, plus extra amounts for children, disability, caring and housing.

Universal Credit is replacing Housing Benefit and income-related Employment and Support Allowance, so if you're working age it's likely the benefit you'll be pointed to for help with living costs. The rules are detailed, and one of them can cost you a benefit you can't get back. Here's the official picture from GOV.UK, without the jargon.

Universal Credit standard allowance by household

Every household gets one standard allowance. This is what GOV.UK lists per month, as of Nov 2026:

Your householdMonthly standard allowance
Single and under 25338.58 pounds
Single and 25 or over424.90 pounds
Couple, both under 25528.34 pounds (for you both)
Couple, either of you 25 or over666.97 pounds (for you both)

What lands in your account depends on that allowance, any extra amounts that apply to you, any money taken off, and how much you earn if you're working. GOV.UK points you to a benefits calculator for a personal estimate.

Extra amounts for children, disability, caring and childcare

Extra amounts aren't added automatically. GOV.UK says you need to report changes when you become eligible, for example if you become a carer. These are the monthly extras it lists:

Extra amountMonthly figure
Each child who lives with you303.94 pounds
First child born before 6 April in 2017 (on top)47.94 pounds
Disabled child, lower amount164.79 pounds
Disabled child, higher amount514.71 pounds
Severe health condition or disability, or nearing the end of life429.80 pounds
Less severe health condition, or one that may improve217.26 pounds
Carer's element (at least 35 hours of care a week)209.34 pounds
Childcare, one child (maximum)1,071.09 pounds
Childcare, 2 or more children (maximum)1,836.16 pounds

With childcare you can claim back up to 85% of your costs if you're working, from a registered provider. If you live with a partner, both of you need to be working unless one of you can't work because of a disability or health condition. You pay up front and claim it back, and your work coach can tell you about support with paying up front. Money for each child carries on until the 31 August after their 16th birthday, or their 19th if they're in eligible education or training. GOV.UK notes different rules for anyone who reported a health condition before 6 April in 2026.

Universal Credit can also include money for rent and some service charges. Homeowners might be able to get a loan to help with mortgage interest.

Who can claim Universal Credit

GOV.UK says you may be able to get it whether you're out of work, working (including self-employed or part time) or unable to work. To claim you must:

  • live in the UK
  • be aged 18 or over (there are some exceptions if you're 16 or 17)
  • be under State Pension age
  • have 16,000 pounds or less in money, savings and investments

If you live with a partner, you both claim and you make one joint claim for the household, even if your partner isn't eligible. If only one of you has reached State Pension age, you can still claim as a couple. Full-time students can only claim in set situations, for example if they're responsible for a child or live with an eligible partner.

What gets taken off your monthly payment

Your payment might be reduced if you're repaying an advance, you'd go over the benefit cap, you've been overpaid before, you owe money for things like Council Tax or energy, you have a paid job, or you have other income such as pensions. Savings matter too: if you have over 6,000 pounds in money, savings and investments, GOV.UK says your payment is cut by 4.35 pounds for every 250 pounds you have between 6,000 pounds and 16,000 pounds.

Some benefits reduce Universal Credit pound for pound, including State Pension, Carer's Allowance, Maternity Allowance, and New Style ESA or JSA. If you work or earn on the side, read my guide on how to declare side hustle income to the tax office so your reporting stays straight.

When Universal Credit is paid

It's paid once a month, usually into a bank, building society or credit union account. GOV.UK says it usually takes around 5 weeks to get your first payment, and if you need money while you wait you can apply for an advance. Your payment is calculated on monthly assessment periods, and you'll usually be paid 7 days after each one ends.

GOV.UK's own example: Sam claims on 10 September, the first assessment period runs to 9 October, and Sam is paid on 17 October and then on the 17th of each month. If a payment date falls on a weekend or bank holiday, you're paid on the working day before. In Scotland you can choose to be paid twice a month. If one monthly payment is hard to manage, you can ask for an alternative payment arrangement, which could mean your rent goes straight to your landlord.

Applying for Universal Credit, step by step

  1. Check whether you're better off first (more on that below), using a benefits calculator, the Citizens Advice Help to Claim service or a local benefits adviser.
  2. Have your bank, building society or credit union details, an email address and access to a phone ready, plus identity documents such as a driving licence, passport, debit or credit card, or a payslip or P60.
  3. Create an online account. If you live with a partner you each create one and link them. Your claim starts on the date you submit it.
  4. Complete the claim within 28 days of creating the account, or you'll have to start again. You'll give details of your housing, earnings, National Insurance number, other benefits, health, childcare and savings.
  5. Go to the meeting to agree your claimant commitment. You can't get your first payment until you have.

If you can't claim online, call the Universal Credit helpline on 0800 328 5644 (Welsh language: 0800 328 1744), Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Calls are free. If something outside your control delayed your claim, such as a disability or the online service being down, you can ask to backdate it by up to one month.

Why switching from older benefits can't be undone

This is the rule that catches people out. GOV.UK says if you already get benefits and you apply for Universal Credit, those benefits might end and you won't be able to apply for them again, even if your Universal Credit application isn't approved. If you or your partner gets Pension Credit, that stops too, and GOV.UK says you'll usually be better off staying on Pension Credit.

If you're on Housing Benefit or income-related ESA, you don't need to do anything unless your circumstances change or you get a Migration Notice. If you do get one, you must move to Universal Credit by the deadline in the letter to keep getting support. When you apply, GOV.UK says you'll keep getting your current benefit for 2 more weeks, and you won't need to pay those extra payments back.

Plain advice before you submit a Universal Credit claim

Don't apply on a hunch if you already get other benefits: check you're better off first, because GOV.UK says the old benefits may end for good. Use the Universal Credit guide on GOV.UK to check the allowance and extra amounts, then report every change the moment it happens. Remember you'll never be asked for bank details in your journal, by phone, text or email.

Planning for the 5-week wait helps too. If you want to build a little extra income alongside work, my list of passive income ideas in the UK that work is a sensible starting point, as long as you report what you earn.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Universal Credit for a single person?

As of Nov 2026, GOV.UK lists a monthly standard allowance of 338.58 pounds if you're single and under 25, and 424.90 pounds if you're single and 25 or over, before any extra amounts or deductions.

How long does the first Universal Credit payment take?

It usually takes around 5 weeks. If you need money while you wait, you can apply for an advance, which is then repaid from your later payments.

Can I get Universal Credit if I work?

Yes. You can claim if you're working, including self-employed or part time. How much you earn affects how much you get.

What is the savings limit for Universal Credit?

You must have 16,000 pounds or less in money, savings and investments. Over 6,000 pounds, your payment is reduced by 4.35 pounds for every 250 pounds.

Can my partner and I claim separately?

No. If you live with your partner, you make one joint claim for the household, even if your partner isn't eligible.

Can a Universal Credit claim be backdated?

Only in certain circumstances, such as a disability or the online service not working, and by up to one month.
