The short version: you can get free logo templates from Canva, Fotor, Shopify, Visme and Wixel. Fotor, Visme and Wixel each list a free plan, Shopify says its logo maker is completely free, and Canva says its logo templates are royalty-free. Before you start, check which file formats you can download and whether any AI features use credits, because designing for free and downloading for free aren't always the same thing.
A logo is often the first thing a new business wants and the last thing it can justify spending on. That's fine. A clean logo from a good template will carry you a long way, as long as you end up with files you can use everywhere. Here's where to find free logo templates and what to watch for.
Logo template sources for a new brand
In no particular order:
- Canva: best for a huge choice of templates and fonts, which Canva says are royalty-free.
- Fotor: best for browsing by theme, with what Fotor says are 300+ free templates, from cake logos to circle logos.
- Shopify: best for online sellers. Shopify says its logo maker is a completely free tool, for your store, social media or wherever you do business.
- Visme: best for adding your business name and an industry icon or illustration to a template.
- Wixel: best for starting from a template or answering a few questions so its AI generator suggests designs.

Free to design is not always free to download
This is the bit that catches people out. Every one of these tools lets you start designing without paying, but what you can take away at the end differs. Wixel says you can download your logo in high resolution and in any format, including with a transparent background, and it's upfront that a free plan gives you a certain number of AI credits to generate and edit your logo. Shopify describes its logo maker as a completely free tool. Canva says its logo templates are royalty-free and won't cost you anything to use. Fotor says you click its Download button and choose the image format to save your logo.
So read the download options and any credit limits on the page before you spend an evening perfecting a design. The two things you'll want are a high-resolution file and a version with a transparent background, so your logo sits cleanly on a website, a social profile or a coloured flyer.
Turning a template into your logo
- Write down your business name exactly as you want it to appear, and one or two words about the feel you're after.
- Pick a source and filter or browse by your industry or style.
- Choose a simple template. The fewer elements it has, the better it will look small.
- Swap in your name, then adjust colours and fonts to suit your brand.
- Check the download options before you finish, and save a high-resolution version and one with a transparent background.
- Test the logo at a tiny size, like a social profile picture, and on a dark and a light background.
Making a template look like yours
The risk with any template is looking like everyone else who used it. Canva says there are thousands of templates and fonts to try, and Fotor's themed collection runs from cake logos to circle logos and even After Effects logo templates, so there's plenty to choose from. Visme suggests you fully customise a template with your business name and an industry icon or illustration, and that's the right instinct. Change the colours, change the font and move things around until it feels like you. Then show it to two or three customers and ask what it says about your business. Their answer will tell you more than an hour of tweaking.
Keep the design simple enough to work in one colour, too. If your logo still reads in black and white, it'll survive a photocopier, an embroidered shirt and a tiny browser tab. If your logo is part of getting a new business seen and found, I can help with the marketing around it. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.

My take on free logo templates
A free template is a sensible way to get a logo that looks smart while you're starting out. Choose a tool whose download options give you what you need, keep the design simple, and make it your own. You can always invest in a designer later, once the business has earned it.
