This Message Was Deleted on WhatsApp (2026): What It Means and Who Deleted It

On WhatsApp, "This message was deleted" means the person who sent it used Delete for everyone, and in a group it can also mean an admin removed it, in which case the line names the admin. WhatsApp says there's no way to get a deleted message back unless it was included in a backup, and messages deleted by a group admin can't be recovered or appealed.

WhatsApp Help gives one explanation for the line: it's what replaces a message once it's been deleted for everyone. Everything below is from WhatsApp Help as of Nov 2026. I won't guess at why anyone deletes anything; that's between you and them.

Three deletion labels and who's behind each

WhatsApp uses different wording depending on who deleted the message, so the label tells you more than people realise.

The admin version is the useful one in groups. WhatsApp says group members can see which admin chose to delete for everyone, so the name in the line is the person to ask.

How a message ends up replaced

WhatsApp says Delete for everyone is there for the moments you'd expect: a message sent to the wrong chat, or one with a mistake in it. When it works, the original is swapped for the line in the chat, and the deletion syncs across all the online devices where you're logged in.

There's a time limit. You have two days after sending to request Delete for everyone, and group admins have two days after someone else's message to remove it. The taps themselves are in my guide to deleting WhatsApp messages, so I won't repeat them.

Voice messages and video notes follow the same pattern. Delete for me leaves the recipient's copy untouched; Delete for everyone removes it from everyone's chat.

Can you get a deleted message back?

WhatsApp is blunt about this. Once a message is deleted, there's no way to get it back unless you've included it in a backup, and WhatsApp says it's unable to recover deleted messages for you. Delete for me gives you a 5 second Undo; once that passes, your copy is permanently deleted.

People often ask whether there's a way to read what the other person removed. That's a separate question, and it's covered in whether you can see deleted WhatsApp messages. If you've lost your own chats and never backed up, recovering WhatsApp messages without a backup is the page for that.

Why Delete for everyone isn't a guarantee

If you're the sender, these are the catches WhatsApp lists, and they matter more than the button:

  • You and the recipients must be on the latest version of WhatsApp.
  • Recipients using WhatsApp on iPhone might still have media you sent saved in their Photos, even after it's gone from the chat.
  • Recipients might see your message before it's deleted, or if the deletion doesn't go through.
  • You won't be notified if deleting for everyone wasn't successful.

That last one stings. The line on your screen tells you nothing about whether the delete reached the other phone in time. Treat it as damage limitation, not an undo.

Channels have their own rule. Admins can delete channel updates up to 30 days after sending, for everyone, but WhatsApp says media saved to people's phones and forwarded updates won't be deleted.

What group admins can remove, and why

For a business running a customer or community group, this is where most of the deletions you didn't make come from. Admins can delete messages sent by other members. They can also switch on Send for admin review in the group permissions, which lets members flag a message they believe is a scam, spam or otherwise inappropriate for the group.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

When a member flags one, all admins are notified, but other members and the person who sent the message aren't. Admins can then delete it for everyone or just for themselves, or report it to WhatsApp, and they have about two days before the review request expires. A member can't send the same message for review more than once.

So if your message in a group is replaced with the admin line, a member may have flagged it, and you wouldn't have been told.

If you sent the wrong thing

  1. Move quickly. You've got two days to use Delete for everyone, but the sooner you do it, the fewer people see it first.
  2. If it's a typo in a text message, edit it instead. WhatsApp lets you edit for up to 15 minutes after sending; the change updates for everyone, shows the word edited next to the timestamp and doesn't send a new notification.
  3. Editing doesn't work on photos, videos or other media, so for a wrong picture or file, delete for everyone.
  4. If it was a photo or video and the recipient's on iPhone, WhatsApp says it might still be saved in their Photos, so a quick note explaining the mix-up may do more than the delete.

If you'd rather certain chats cleared themselves on a timer, that's a different setting, and turning on disappearing messages explains it.

My verdict

I'd read "This message was deleted" at face value: the sender removed it on purpose, and in a group the admin version names who did it. Skip chasing WhatsApp to get it back, because WhatsApp says it can't, and admin deletions can't be appealed.

If you're the one who slipped up, I'd edit within 15 minutes for text, delete for everyone for anything else, and not rely on the delete alone, since you won't be told if it failed.

If your customers talk to you through WhatsApp chats and groups, setting rules for how those messages are handled is part of the workflow planning I help teams with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.

Frequently asked questions

What does This message was deleted mean on WhatsApp?

It means the sender used Delete for everyone, so WhatsApp replaced the message with that line in the chat.

Who deleted the WhatsApp message?

If it says This message was deleted, the sender did. If it says deleted by admin followed by a name, that group admin removed it, and group members can see which admin it was.

Can I get a deleted WhatsApp message back?

WhatsApp says there's no way to get a deleted message back unless it was included in a backup, and messages deleted by a group admin aren't recoverable and can't be appealed.

How long do you have to delete a WhatsApp message for everyone?

Two days after sending. Group admins have two days after someone else sends a message.

Does the sender know if Delete for everyone failed?

No. WhatsApp says you won't be notified if deleting for everyone wasn't successful, and recipients might see the message before it's deleted.
