Grammarly Paraphrase (2026): How the Paraphraser Agent Works, Its Styles and Who Gets It

Grammarly's paraphrase tool is the Paraphraser agent: it rewrites your whole document in one of six preset styles, or in a custom voice you build, as paragraph-level suggestions you accept or dismiss. As of Nov 2026 it's in Superhuman Go and in Grammarly's docs writing surface for Pro and Plus subscribers, and Free users get a limited number of suggestions per day.

Grammarly is now part of Superhuman, which is why the Paraphraser shows up in two places. The bit people miss is that it isn't a box you paste a sentence into. It works on the document you're already writing, and it hands you rewrites one paragraph at a time, so you stay the editor.

Where the Paraphraser lives

As of Nov 2026, Grammarly's own guide lists two homes for it: Superhuman Go, and docs, the AI writing surface at app.grammarly.com. In both, the Paraphraser is an agent with its own icon on the right-hand side of your document. You click the icon, pick a style, and the suggestions appear.

If you're on a work plan the picture changes slightly. For Enterprise, Business and Education accounts, the Paraphraser is reachable in docs only. When docs is switched on for your team, agents are on by default, but an admin can turn the Paraphraser off on the Agent access page. So if a colleague has it and you don't, that's the first place your admin should look.

The six preset styles, names only

Grammarly gives you six presets: Humanize, Academic, Professional, Streamlined, Creative and Simple. Here's the honest catch. The Paraphraser guide names the styles and stops there. It doesn't describe what each one changes, so anyone telling you exactly how Streamlined differs from Simple is guessing.

The admin page describes the agent as a way to rework text to match tone, style and audience, with a humanize mode for natural flow. The docs page adds that it rewrites your content in a range of tones while keeping the original meaning. That's the whole official brief.

My practical fix: run two styles on the same paragraph and compare them side by side before you commit to one for the whole document. It takes a minute and tells you more than any description would.

Build a voice that sounds like you

The presets are generic by design. The custom voice is where the Paraphraser gets more useful for a business, because you can teach it how you write. As of Nov 2026 the steps are:

  1. Open the Paraphraser from its icon on the right of your document.
  2. Click Create a voice.
  3. Name the voice and add a few writing examples so it can learn your tone. The Humanizer guide asks for a sample of 200 words or more, and since the two agents share voice profiles, that's a sensible length to aim for.
  4. Save it. Your voice now appears in the list of styles next to the six presets.
  5. Select it whenever you want rewrites in your style. You can create several voices and delete any you stop using.

Pick samples you'd be happy to send a client: a good email, a short proposal, a page of your website. Feed it your best writing, not your rushed writing, because that's what it'll copy.

Accept, dismiss or undo

Once you choose a style, the suggested edits appear as paragraph-level rewrites on the left-hand panel, overlaid on your text. You can accept a suggestion, dismiss it, or undo an individual edit after you've taken it. Nothing changes until you say so.

I'd treat that control as the main feature. Go paragraph by paragraph, keep the rewrites that say it better, and dismiss the ones that flatten a point you made on purpose.

Paraphraser, AI Rewriter or Humanizer

Grammarly has three agents that sound alike, and they do different jobs. Here's the split, using only what Grammarly's guides say as of Nov 2026:

AgentIts jobWho gets it
ParaphraserRewrites the whole document in a preset style or your custom voice, as paragraph-level suggestionsPro and Plus in Superhuman Go and docs; Free gets a limited number of suggestions per day
AI RewriterFlags words and phrases AI often uses, sorted into four groups from Almost always AI to Sometimes AI, and suggests alternatives AI uses lessPro and Plus in docs, rolling out gradually
HumanizerGives feedback to make AI-heavy text sound more natural, and shares your voice profilesFree, Pro and Plus in Superhuman Go and docs

In short: the Paraphraser changes style, the AI Rewriter hunts for phrases that read as machine-made, and the Humanizer works on tone. If your goal is a cleaner, more professional email, the Paraphraser is the one you want.

The AI Detector catch

This is the part I'd want every user to know before they lean on it. Grammarly's own AI Detector guide says that if you use its agents to rewrite your text, the AI Detector is likely to flag that text as AI-generated. The reason it gives is plain: rewrites from the Grammarly, Paraphraser and Humanizer agents come from Grammarly's own large language model.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

The same guide goes further. It says paraphrasing edits, from Grammarly or anyone else, are made by language models, so they should still trigger some AI-generated reading. Ordinary red and blue underline corrections typically don't move the score. Grammarly's advice for anyone who wants to avoid the flag is to use the agents for feedback and type the changes in yourself, rather than letting them rewrite the text directly.

Two more points from that page matter. Grammarly says its detection score shouldn't be treated as an objective source of truth, and that other detectors such as Turnitin, GPTZero and Copyleaks may give different scores. So a clean result in Grammarly tells you nothing certain about what a client's or a school's checker will say.

Free, Pro and work accounts

As of Nov 2026, the Paraphraser is a Pro and Plus feature, and Free gets a taste with a limited number of suggestions per day. Grammarly doesn't print the daily number in the guide, so I won't guess it.

Pro also brings Grammarly's wider rewriting features, such as full-sentence rewrites and one-click tone adjustments. Grammarly's Pro page says Pro includes 2,000 monthly generative AI prompts, against 1,000 on Premium bought through the App Store or Google Play. Pro can also be shared with a team of up to 149 members. For current prices, go to Grammarly's own plans page, because they change.

What I'd do with it

I'd pick Professional or Simple for client emails and proposals, and build one custom voice from my best writing for everything else. I'd skip Humanize if AI flags worry you, and I'd skip whole-document rewrites on anything that may be checked by a detector. Use the suggestions as a second opinion, then type the wording you like.

If you want to compare it with another rewriting tool, my head-to-head of Grammarly and QuillBot covers that, and there's a wider round-up of AI rewriter tools if you're still choosing.

If you want your team using AI rewriting tools in a way that keeps your brand voice, that's the kind of AI training I run. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.

Frequently asked questions

Does Grammarly have a paraphrasing tool?

Yes. It's the Paraphraser agent, available as of Nov 2026 in Superhuman Go and in Grammarly's docs writing surface. It rewrites your document in one of six styles or your own custom voice.

Is Grammarly's paraphraser free?

Partly. Pro and Plus subscribers get the full agent, while Grammarly Free users get a limited number of suggestions per day.

What styles does the Grammarly Paraphraser have?

Six presets: Humanize, Academic, Professional, Streamlined, Creative and Simple, plus any custom voices you create from your own writing samples.

Will Grammarly's AI Detector flag paraphrased text?

It's likely. Grammarly says rewrites from its Paraphraser, Humanizer and Grammarly agents come from its own language model, so the AI Detector may flag them. It suggests using the agents for feedback and making changes by hand.

Why can't I see the Paraphraser at work?

On Enterprise, Business and Education plans it's only in docs, and an admin can switch it off on the Agent access page. Ask your admin to check that setting.
