Facebook's own help says a personal profile cover photo has to be at least 720 pixels wide. For a Facebook Page, the cover must be at least 400 by 150 pixels and loads fastest as an sRGB JPG that's 851 pixels wide, 315 pixels tall and under 100 kilobytes, as of October 2026.
There are two answers because Facebook treats your personal profile and a business Page separately, and its help pages give different figures for each. I'll keep them apart below, because mixing them up is how people end up with a blurry or badly cropped cover.
Facebook image sizes at a glance
| Image | Size Facebook gives | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Profile cover photo | At least 720 pixels wide | Add or change your cover photo |
| Page cover photo | At least 400 x 150; loads fastest as an 851 x 315 sRGB JPG under 100 kilobytes | Page profile picture and cover photo dimensions |
| Page profile picture | 320 x 320 for best quality, cropped to a circle | Page profile picture and cover photo dimensions |
| Page profile picture on screen | 176 x 176 on computers, 196 x 196 on smartphones, 36 x 36 on most feature phones | Page profile picture and cover photo dimensions |
| Personal profile picture | No pixel size given | Facebook's help doesn't state one |
That last row is the honest one. Facebook's help doesn't give a pixel size for a personal profile picture, so I won't make one up. The Page figure of 320 x 320 is the closest official number, and it's for Pages.
Personal profile cover: the 720-pixel minimum
For your own profile, the only number Facebook gives is a minimum: your cover image has to be at least 720 pixels wide. There's no recommended height. Once you've chosen a photo you can reposition it by dragging it up or down, which is how you rescue a crop that cuts off someone's head. As of October 2026 the steps on a computer are:
- Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook, then click your name to go to your profile.
- Click Edit cover photo in the bottom right of your cover photo.
- Click Choose cover photo. If you don't have a cover photo yet, click Upload Photo.
- Click Upload Photo to add one from your computer, or Select Photo to pick one from your Facebook albums.
- Click the image and drag it up or down to reposition it.
Business Page cover and profile picture sizes
Pages get much more detail. Your Page's profile picture is cropped to a circle and should be 320 pixels wide and 320 pixels tall for best quality. It then displays at 176 x 176 pixels on computers, 196 x 196 on smartphones and 36 x 36 on most feature phones, so a busy logo turns into a smudge on the smallest screens.
For the Page cover, Facebook gives the same minimum and the same fastest-loading size for computers and phones: at least 400 pixels wide and 150 tall, and fastest as an 851 x 315 sRGB JPG under 100 kilobytes. What changes is the shape it's shown in. On a computer the cover left-aligns with a full bleed at a 16:9 aspect ratio. On a mobile device it left-aligns with a full bleed at 2.4:1.
Here's the catch. Facebook says the cover may be cropped and resized to fit different screens, so 851 x 315 is the speed recommendation, not a promise that every edge shows everywhere. Keep anything important away from the edges.
What gets covered and cropped
Two more warnings sit on Facebook's dimensions page, and they're the ones most cover designs ignore:
- The left-hand side of the cover is partly covered by your profile picture.
- On mobile devices, the profile picture overlaps the cover photo by approximately 40 pixels.
- For profile pictures and covers that carry your logo or text, you may get a better result with a PNG file.
Put those together and the safe zone is clear: keep text and logos away from the left side and the bottom edge, and save text-heavy covers as PNG rather than JPG.
Who can see your cover and profile picture
Your current profile picture and cover photo are public, so anyone on or off Facebook can see them. When you change either one, it's posted on your profile and may appear in your friends' Feeds. Old ones go into your Profile Pictures and Cover Photos albums, and a thumbnail of your profile picture shows next to your name across Facebook.
You can't make the current ones private, but you can control past ones by editing their privacy settings, and where it's available in your country you can lock your profile to show a limited view to people who aren't your friends. For more on that, see how to make your Facebook profile picture private and Facebook's profile picture guard. And no, Facebook doesn't let people track who views their profile.

What I'd upload
I'd start with an 851 x 315 sRGB JPG under 100 kilobytes for a Page cover, switching to PNG if it carries a logo or words, and skip tiny text near the left edge where the profile picture sits. For a personal cover, use a photo that's well over 720 pixels wide and drag it into place after uploading.
For the profile picture on a Page, design at 320 x 320 and check it still reads as a small circle. If you're changing your own profile picture, here's how to change your profile picture on Facebook.
