Gemini Guided Learning (2026): How to Use Gemini as a Tutor

Gemini Guided Learning is a tutor mode: instead of handing you one answer, it walks you through a topic step by step. To start it, go to gemini.google.com, click Add Files in the text box, then More tools, then Guided Learning, and type your question; as of October 2026 you need to be signed in to use it.

It's built for students, but it works just as well for an adult picking up a new skill, from reading a balance sheet to understanding how a new piece of software works.

What Guided Learning does differently

Google introduced Guided Learning in its release notes on 6 August 2025 as a mode that builds a deeper understanding of whatever you're trying to learn. Instead of a single answer, it breaks concepts down and gives interactive help along the way. On desktop you'll find it as the Guided Learning chip, and on mobile as the Learn chip. Google said the experience was open to all users.

Google's current help page describes the wider idea as using Gemini as a tutor, with guided learning, visual aids and educational resources. It also says these features are being released gradually in the mobile app, so if you can't find them on your phone, try gemini.google.com.

Start a guided session

  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com and make sure you're signed in.
  2. In the text box, click Add Files.
  3. At the bottom, click More tools, then Guided Learning.
  4. Enter a question or prompt about the topic you want to learn.
  5. Optional: click Add files, then Upload Files, to add your own notes, slides or an image.
  6. Click Submit.

Google's sample questions are school topics like what photosynthesis is or what the parts of a cell are. For work, try something like asking it to explain cash flow forecasting as if you're new to it, then to check your understanding with a question at each step.

Learn with pictures and YouTube videos

Gemini may add images to its answers to explain a concept, and you can ask for a diagram directly. Videos come with a condition: Gemini only includes YouTube videos in responses when Gemini Apps Activity is on.

The handy trick here is that you can paste a YouTube link into your prompt and ask Gemini to use that video, or to create study materials from it. A recorded webinar or a training video your team has to watch can become a quiz in a couple of minutes.

Quizzes, flashcards, practice tests and study guides

Google's tip is to start your prompt with what you want made, followed by the topic or material. These are the prompts it lists, as of October 2026:

Start your prompt withWhat you getExtra options
Create a quiz aboutAn interactive quizHint, Next, Back and More questions. When you finish, Gemini shares your strengths and focus areas.
Create flashcards aboutA flashcard deckHint, Shuffle mode, Text to speech and Restart flashcards
Create a study guide aboutA study guideChoose Canvas under Add Files to get it as a doc
Generate a full length practice test for the, then the test nameA full practice test. Supported tests include SAT, JEE Main and NEET UG.Take the full test or chosen sections, an optional countdown timer, and a summary with your score per section

You can attach your own source material with Add files, and your materials open in the Canvas panel on the right. If you'd like to turn a study guide into a working document, my guide to Gemini Canvas explains that side.

To share a quiz, flashcard set, practice test or study guide, open it in Canvas, click Share and copy the g.co/gemini/share link. You can also add the chat to a study notebook from the sidebar using More, then Add to Notebook.

Textbook-backed answers with @OpenStax

Type @OpenStax in your prompt and Gemini uses reputable educational sources, including OpenStax textbooks, to answer. When Google launched this in August 2024, it described the source as Rice University's OpenStax resources, with citations and links to the relevant textbook content. You can also ask for practice questions with feedback and hints, in a multiple choice or open-ended format.

Who can't use every part yet

  • OpenStax: only in English and in the United States for now, and not for users under 18 or anyone signed in with a work or school account.
  • Quizzes in Gemini in Chrome: only in English in India and the United States for now.
  • Sharing: if you're signed in to a work or school account, you can't share practice tests, quizzes, flashcards or study guides.
  • Videos in answers: only when Gemini Apps Activity is on.
  • The mobile app: features are arriving gradually, so the web app is the reliable place to start.

How I'd study with it

I'd use Guided Learning to test yourself after you've read the material, not instead of reading it. Skip it as your only source. Google's own help pages say Gemini is AI and can make mistakes, so check anything important against the textbook, the course notes or the original document. Upload your own notes where you can, because a quiz built from your materials tests what you're meant to know rather than what Gemini guesses you need.

If you teach or train others, this list of free AI tools for teachers puts Gemini alongside other options, and my guide to using Gemini covers the app beyond learning. Learning features change often, so check Google's help page for the latest.

If you want your team learning new skills with AI as a tutor, that's the kind of AI training I run. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
