Customer segmentation tools group your customers by behaviour, purchases or traits so you can send each group something relevant. They come in two layers: data tools that build the segment from your customer data, and messaging platforms that use segments to send email, SMS and push. Many teams need one of each. Ten tools follow in no particular order.
Segmentation sounds like one job, but most businesses split it across two tools without noticing. One holds the data and decides who belongs where. The other sends the campaign. Knowing which half you're shopping for saves a lot of demos.
The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from each vendor's own website, read as of Oct 2026.

Where segments get built and where they get used
Here's what I found reading the vendor pages. On the data side, Hightouch calls itself a customer data and AI platform for marketers and its page says it can send messages now, RudderStack is the agentic customer data platform, and Twilio Segment is a customer data platform with a free trial that needs no card. Blueshift says it will unify behavioural, transactional and identity data into a single, real-time profile.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
On the messaging side, Omnisend says its AI analyses your audience and builds segments, Encharge sends broadcasts to your audience or a segment, Loops is an email platform for SaaS, and Iterable gives marketers direct control over audiences, journeys and experimentation. The lines are blurring, with data tools adding sending and senders adding data features, but the split still decides which one you buy first.
Four kinds of customer segment worth building
- Behaviour. What people do: pages viewed, features used, emails opened. The most useful kind for SaaS.
- Purchase history. What, when and how often they buy. The backbone of ecommerce segmentation.
- Lifecycle stage. New signup, active user, lapsed customer. Simple, and it covers most automated journeys.
- Traits. Plan, company size, location or role, usually from your CRM or signup form.
How to choose a segmentation tool
- Where does your customer data live today: a warehouse, your product database, your store platform or your email tool?
- Who builds segments? A no-code builder matters if marketers do it without the data team.
- Do you need segments to update in real time, or is daily enough?
- Which channels will use them: email, SMS, push, in-app or ads?
- Do you already have a data layer? If you do, you may only need the messaging half.
- Can you test a segment on a small send before rolling it out?
A segment only pays off when you act on it, and my guide to segmenting your audience to improve marketing results shows how.

My plain advice on customer segmentation tools
Look at where your data sits before you look at features. If it's spread across several systems and you've got a warehouse, a data-layer tool that builds segments and pushes them out is the place to start. If you're a store or a small SaaS team with everything in one place, a messaging platform with good built-in segmentation is usually enough on its own. Start with three or four segments you'll send to straight away, and add more once those are earning their keep.
If you're still choosing where customer records live, my guide to customer database software covers it, and my list of email marketing software for small business covers the sending side.

Frequently asked questions
What is customer segmentation software?
It groups customers by behaviour, purchases, lifecycle stage or traits so you can target each group with different messages, offers or experiences.
What's the difference between a CDP and an email platform for segmentation?
A customer data platform collects and unifies customer data from many sources and builds segments from it. An email or messaging platform uses segments to send. Some tools now do both.
Do I need a CDP to segment customers?
Not always. If your data sits in one store platform or one email tool, its built-in segmentation may be enough. A CDP helps when data is spread across several systems.
What are the main types of customer segmentation?
The common ones are behavioural, purchase history, lifecycle stage and traits such as plan, location or company size.
Can segments update in real time?
Many tools on this list describe real-time profiles or audiences. Check whether your chosen tool updates segments live or on a schedule.
How many customer segments should I start with?
A few you'll send to straight away, such as new customers, active customers and lapsed customers, then add more once you see what works.
