How to See Instants on Instagram (and Why You Can't)

To see instants on Instagram, open Messages and look at the bottom right of your inbox: instants your friends share with you sit there as a stack of photos, with a number showing how many are waiting. Tap the stack to open them, but bear in mind each instant can be viewed only once.

That's straight from Instagram's Help Centre, read as of October 2026. If the stack isn't there, or you opened one and can't get it back, the reasons are below, and none of them need a support ticket.

The thing people miss: when the stack vanishes, it's often because they swiped it away themselves. A swipe right on Instants snoozes it. Instagram gives the way back, and it takes two seconds once you know it.

Where to look in your inbox

Instants don't show up in your feed or your stories tray. Instagram puts them on the right of your inbox, at the bottom. Open Messages in the Instagram app and look for the Instants preview there.

What that corner shows depends on what's waiting. When friends have shared instants you haven't opened, you'll see a photo preview with a numbered notification in its top right. When there's nothing to open, you'll just see the word Instants on the right instead.

Opening the stack, step by step

  1. Open Messages in the Instagram app.
  2. Look at the bottom right of your inbox for the Instants preview.
  3. Check the number in its top right corner: that's how many instants are waiting.
  4. Tap the preview to open the first instant, then carry on through the stack.
  5. React with an emoji or reply with text. A reply lands in your DMs with that person.
  6. If a photo breaks the Community Standards, tap and hold the person's username and tap Report.

Instagram says friends who are sent an instant see a preview of the photo before opening it. So you'll get a glimpse before you tap, and that's your cue to decide whether now's the moment to look.

Why you can only open each one once

Instagram's rule is simple: each instant can be viewed once. Once it's gone, it can't be viewed again by that account, on Instants or on Instagram. There's no replay button and nothing saved on the viewer's side.

Timing matters too. Instagram says others can open instants within 24 hours of when they were shared, so an instant nobody opens doesn't sit in your inbox forever. If a friend says they sent you one yesterday morning and you can't find it, that window is the likely reason.

That's very different from stories. If you're used to catching a story a second time, here's how far you can push rewatching a story after it disappears, but instants don't give you that option.

Reacting, replying and reporting

  • React: send an emoji reaction and the sender gets a notification.
  • Reply: type a text reply and it's sent as a message between you and that person, so it shows up in your chats.
  • Report: if a photo doesn't follow Instagram's Community Standards, tap and hold the person's username and tap Report.

A reply is the only one that leaves something you can scroll back to. The photo itself goes after one view, but the chat it started stays in your messages.

Why your stack is empty or missing

Instagram doesn't publish one troubleshooting list for this, but its articles point to a handful of causes. Work through them in this order:

  1. You snoozed it. Swiping right on Instants hides it from your inbox. Check this first.
  2. You don't follow each other. Instants come from friends, meaning followers you follow back, and from Close Friends lists. If you follow someone who doesn't follow you back, don't expect their instants.
  3. You've blocked or muted them. Instagram says block, mute and restrict apply to instants, so someone you've muted won't show up the way other friends do. Blocking someone on Instagram also blocks them on Instants.
  4. Nothing is waiting. If nobody has shared one you can still open in the last 24 hours, the corner just says Instants.
  5. You don't have it yet. Instagram's parental supervision article says Instants isn't currently available for everyone.

On availability: the Instants feature is available globally inside the Instagram app, while the standalone Instants app is only in select countries on iOS and Android. You don't need the app to see instants. You log into it with your Instagram account, and photos shared in the app show up for friends on Instagram and the other way round.

Bringing a snoozed stack back

If you swiped it away, Instagram's fix is to tap and hold in the bottom right-hand corner of your inbox and swipe left. The stack comes back where it was. If you'd rather keep it hidden for good, I've covered the options in how to turn off Instants on Instagram.

What the sender sees

This is the question that worries people most, so here's exactly what Instagram says and nothing more. Information on who viewed the instants someone shared isn't available to them. What they do get is a notification when you react to or reply to their photo.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

So if you open an instant and do nothing, Instagram's Help Centre doesn't list anything that tells the sender it was you. React or reply, and they'll know.

On their side, senders have an archive in the top right of Instants that keeps photos they've sent for the past year. Tapping a photo there shows when it was shared, which list it went to and who reacted. Reactions, not views.

Screenshots are a separate question, and Instagram's sources answer it differently. Its blog says instants can't be screenshot or screen recorded, while its Help Centre warns that someone could photograph an instant with a camera or another device before it goes away. Treat anything you're sent as something the sender trusted you with.

Phone only, no computer version

Instagram's Help Centre lists Instants under its iPhone and Android app help and says the feature isn't available on computers. If you're checking messages on a laptop and wondering where the stack has gone, that's why. Pick up your phone.

My advice

Don't open an instant until you've got a second to look at it, because you won't get another go. If your stack has vanished, try the tap, hold and swipe left fix before anything else. And if one particular friend's instants never turn up, check that you both follow each other before you assume something's broken. Check the follow before you blame the app.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see Instants on Instagram?

The usual reasons in Instagram's help are that you snoozed the stack by swiping right, that you and the sender don't follow each other back, that you've blocked or muted them, or that Instants isn't available on your account yet. It's also phone only.

Can I view an instant twice?

No. Instagram says each instant can be viewed once, and once it's gone it can't be viewed again by that account on Instants or Instagram.

Can people see that I viewed their instant?

Instagram says information on who viewed someone's instants isn't available to them. The sender is notified when you react or reply.

How do I bring back the Instants stack?

Tap and hold in the bottom right-hand corner of your inbox and swipe left. That reverses the swipe right that hid it.

Does a reply to an instant go to DMs?

Yes. Instagram says a text reply is sent as a message between you and that person, so it appears in your chats.

Can I see Instants on my computer?

No. Instagram's Help Centre says the feature isn't available on computers. Use the Instagram app on your iPhone or Android phone.
