Firefox Dark Mode Extension Options (2026): 9 Compared

A Firefox dark mode extension repaints web pages with dark backgrounds and light text, and some switch Firefox's own theme on a timer or dim everything around a video. One add-on has far more daily users than the rest, so compare update dates and the Recommended badge as well. Nine follow in no particular order.

Most websites still open in bright white, even late at night. The add-ons here deal with that in three ways, going by their own listings: repainting every page dark, changing Firefox's theme on a timer, or fading the page around a video so it feels like a cinema.

They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order. Every number comes from each add-on's Firefox Add-ons (addons.mozilla.org) listing: author, daily users, average rating, ratings count, last updated date and the Recommended badge, as of Oct 2026. If it's one app that's bothering you, my guide on how to change TikTok to dark mode might be all you need.

How I chose them and the nine side by side

Each add-on here says on its listing that it darkens pages or Firefox itself. I read the same things on every listing: author, daily users, average rating, ratings count, last updated date and badge. Type and Good for come from each description. None of the nine says it's free, so the last column reads Not stated, as of Oct 2026.

Nine dark mode add-ons for Firefox

automaticDark

Best for: Switching Firefox's own theme between light and dark automatically by the clock, rather than repainting the websites you visit.

Dark Reader

Best for: Turning every website dark with the add-on most Firefox users on this list already have, by a wide margin on daily users.

Midnight Lizard

Best for: People who want more than dark: custom colour schemes, a blue light filter, a screen shader, high contrast and grayscale in one add-on.

Night Eye

Best for: Flipping sites between dark and light as you like; note the listing is flagged as needing a payment, as of Oct 2026.

Turn Off the Lights

Best for: Watching video with everything else faded out, cinema style, on YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch and more, plus dark mode for all sites.

One add-on dwarfs the rest, and four carry the badge

Dark Reader shows 1,352,609 daily users, as of Oct 2026. The next biggest on this list, Turn Off the Lights, shows 66,183, so the gap is roughly twenty to one. Four add-ons here carry Mozilla's Recommended by Firefox badge: those two, plus Dark Background and Light Text and automaticDark.

The listing simply called Dark Mode, published by Albert Inc, was last updated July 17, 2020 and has the lowest average here at 3.2, yet it still shows 51,841 daily users, as of Oct 2026. Midnight Lizard was last updated January 20, 2021 and shows 629 ratings on 6,033 daily users. Two of the nine were last updated before 2022.

One more thing the listings reveal: one add-on here is flagged as needing a payment, as of Oct 2026. If that matters to you, read the listing before you add it.

Which dark mode approach to go for

  • Every site dark, no fuss: pick a global dark theme and leave it on.
  • Some sites dark, others not: pick one that lets you choose pages one by one.
  • You like to fiddle with colours: pick one with custom schemes or adjustable colours.
  • Only Firefox's own theme bothers you: pick a time-based theme changer.
  • You mostly watch video: pick one that fades the page around the player.

Before you turn on a dark mode add-on

  1. Check the last updated date. On this list it runs from July 17, 2020 to October 27, 2026, as of Oct 2026.
  2. Look for the Recommended by Firefox badge on the listing.
  3. Read whether the listing is flagged as needing a payment.
  4. Try it on the sites you use most, since a repainted page won't always look like the original design.

And if it's Pinterest at night that hurts your eyes, here's how to change Pinterest to dark mode without any add-on.

My plain advice on dark mode for Firefox

Decide what you want darker first: every website, a few websites, Firefox's own toolbars or just the space around a video. That one choice cuts nine add-ons down to two or three. Then compare the last updated date and the ratings count, and go for the one that's still getting updates.

Don't stack two dark mode add-ons on top of each other. They'll fight over the same page, so keep one and remove the other.
