Toptal alternatives are places to hire freelance or remote developers, designers and other specialists. They split into vetted talent networks that screen people for you, open freelance platforms where you do the screening yourself, and offshore team builders that hire and run a team on your behalf. Ten options follow in no particular order.
Strong developers without months of hiring: that's what anyone weighing Toptal alternatives wants. Some services below sell vetting and a shortlist, others sell choice and leave the screening to you, and a few will build and manage the whole team.
They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from each company's own website, read as of Oct 2026.
Toptal alternatives in a quick comparison
I checked the free plan column on each vendor's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version or an open source edition. Trial only means it names a time-limited free trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the vendor's own site before you sign up.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
AI talent pivots and a top 2% promise
Here's what stood out reading the company pages. Arc's title promises the top 2% of talent, Braintrust now calls itself an AI-powered talent network for enterprise, and Andela's title reads the human layer powering production AI. Several of these networks are leaning hard into AI talent and agentic engineering.
Flexiple's title is about building an offshore India team in weeks, and Lemon.io says you can start hiring vetted developers straight from Claude Code or ChatGPT.
Vetted network, open platform or managed offshore team?
- Vetted talent networks. They screen candidates and send a shortlist, so you interview fewer people. You trade choice for speed.
- Open freelance platforms. Huge choice and full control, but the screening is your job.
- Offshore team builders. They find people, handle payroll and compliance, and can run the team for you.
- AI evaluation networks. Some networks now recruit experts to review AI output in coding and science, useful if you're training or testing models.
How to judge a talent network before you sign
- Ask how candidates are vetted: coding tests, live interviews, English checks or reference calls.
- Find out how quickly you'll see a shortlist and how many people are on it.
- Check who handles contracts, payroll and compliance for people in other countries.
- Ask what happens if a hire doesn't work out in the first weeks.
- Start with one role and a trial project before you scale up.

My plain advice on hiring through a Toptal alternative
Decide how much screening you want to do yourself. If you need a strong developer quickly and don't have time to interview twenty people, a vetted network earns its keep. If you've got the time and know what good looks like, an open platform gives you the most choice. And if you want a whole team without becoming an employer abroad, an offshore team builder takes payroll and compliance off your plate. Whichever route you pick, start with one role and a short trial project.
If you're hiring for the full stack, my advice on hiring full stack developers is a useful next read.

Frequently asked questions
What's the best alternative to Toptal?
It depends on how much screening you want to do. Vetted talent networks send a shortlist, open freelance platforms give you more choice, and offshore team builders hire and manage a team for you.
Which platforms vet developers before you hire?
Most of the networks on this list say they vet candidates, for example on domain expertise and English fluency, before you see them. Ask each one how its screening works.
Can I hire a full offshore team rather than one freelancer?
Yes. At least one service here builds offshore teams and handles payroll, compliance and HR for you.
Are talent networks better than open freelance platforms?
Not always. Networks save you screening time, while open platforms give you more choice and control. Pick by how much time you have to interview.
Do these networks only place developers?
No. Some also place designers, marketers, product managers and assistants, and several now focus on AI and agentic engineering skills.
