Tavily alternatives are web search APIs that give AI agents and RAG apps fresh results from the web. They split into AI-native search APIs, Google results APIs that return the results page as data, engines with their own index, and crawlers that fetch full page content. Ten options follow in no particular order.
Your agent needs to search the web and read what it finds, fast and in a format a model can use, and that's the job every one of these Tavily alternatives sets out to do. They get their results in very different ways, though.
They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from each vendor's own website, read as of Oct 2026.
Tavily alternatives side by side
I checked the free plan column on each vendor's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version or an open source edition. Trial only means it names a time-limited free trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the vendor's own site before you sign up.

Ten web search APIs for agents and RAG
Brave Search API
Best for: Agent builders who want results from an independent index rather than a wrapper over another engine, with no second hop per call.
Exa
Best for: Teams building search agents that want fast, accurate results and strong showings on agent benchmarks such as BrowseComp and WideSearch.
Firecrawl
Best for: Developers who want to search the web and get full content from the results, with an open source core they can run themselves.
Jina
Best for: RAG builders who want URLs converted to Markdown, plus multilingual embeddings and a reranker for better relevance.
Linkup
Best for: AI labs and financial firms that want web search through one API call, or deployed inside their own cloud.
Perplexity API
Best for: Developers who want a search API alongside an agent API with web search, URL fetching and code execution, plus embeddings.
SearchApi
Best for: SEO and data teams that want real-time Google results as JSON, with coordinate-level geo-targeting and free requests to test it.
SerpApi
Best for: Teams that want to scrape Google and other search engines through one fast, complete API, with plans from standard to enterprise.
Serper
Best for: Builders who want quick Google search results through a lightweight SERP API, returned in one to two seconds.
You.com API
Best for: Enterprise teams that want a first-party index with no reseller layer, plus control over sources, freshness, geography and language on each request.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Own index or a wrapper over Google?
Here's what stood out reading the vendor pages. Brave's page says its API answers every query from its own index, where other search APIs fall back to Google or Bing for long-tail queries. You.com makes a similar point about its first-party crawler and index, with no reseller layer in between.
Serper and SerpApi take the other route: both are titled Google search APIs, so what you get back is Google's own results. Exa and Linkup describe themselves as search APIs built for AI, and Jina's site lists an MCP server alongside its reader.
AI-native, SERP API, own index or crawler?
- AI-native search APIs. Built for agents: clean, ranked results and often answers or full content, ready for a model.
- Google results APIs. The search engine's results page returned as JSON, with geo-targeting. Ideal when you want what a person would see in Google.
- Own-index engines. Independent results that don't depend on another provider's roadmap.
- Crawlers and readers. Fetch full pages and turn them into Markdown so the model reads the source, not just a snippet.
Five tests to run on any search API
- Run 20 of your agent's real queries and compare relevance side by side.
- Time the full round trip, including any second call to fetch page content.
- Check freshness on a news query from today.
- See what comes back: snippets, full content, citations or raw results.
- Check rate limits against the number of calls your agent makes per task.

My plain advice on replacing Tavily
Decide whose results you want. If your agent should see what a person sees on Google, a Google results API is the simplest route. If you'd rather not depend on Google at all, pick an engine with its own index. If the answer has to come from full pages rather than snippets, pair search with a crawler or reader. Then run your own queries through two or three options for a week before committing, because relevance on your topics is the only test that counts.

Frequently asked questions
What's the best alternative to Tavily?
It depends on where you want results to come from. AI-native APIs suit agents that want clean, ready results, Google results APIs suit SEO and SERP data, and engines with their own index suit teams that want independence from Google.
Which search APIs use their own index?
At least two on this list say they answer from their own index or first-party crawler rather than falling back to Google or Bing. Check the vendor's own page for how it sources results.
Can I get Google search results through an API?
Yes. Several APIs here return Google's results page as JSON, with options like geo-targeting by location.
Is there an open source option?
One web data API on this list says it's open source, so you can run the crawling side yourself.
Do search APIs return full page content?
Some do. Others return links and snippets only, so you'd pair them with a crawler or reader that turns each page into Markdown.
