To cancel Netflix, go to the Manage your membership page, tap or click Cancel, then tap or click Finish Cancellation. That's the only way to end your membership; signing out or deleting the Netflix app doesn't cancel anything, and you'll get a confirmation email once it's done.
Here's what most people don't realise. Cancelling doesn't cut you off on the spot. If there's time left in your billing period, you can keep watching until the account closes automatically at the end of it, and you won't be charged again unless you restart. The one exception is an account on hold, which closes immediately when you cancel.
Cancel Netflix in three steps
- Go to the Manage your membership page, signing in first if you need to.
- Tap or click Cancel.
- Under Cancel, tap or click Finish Cancellation.
Netflix sends a confirmation email to the address on the account. To see the exact date your account will close, check your Payment History.
What happens to your account after you cancel
| Your situation | What happens, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Time left in your billing period | You keep watching until the end of the billing period |
| Account on hold | It closes immediately |
| Gift card or promotional balance | You keep watching for as many months as the remaining balance covers |
| Downloads on your devices | They're deleted when the account cancels |
| You rejoin within 24 months | Your viewing activity, recommendations, ratings, account details, gameplay history and game saves are still there |
That gift card row is worth knowing. If you've got a balance sitting on the account, cancelling doesn't waste it: you'll keep watching until it runs out, then lose access.
No cancel button? You're billed through a partner
If you can't see the cancellation option, Netflix is probably billed through a payment partner, and you'll need to cancel with them. Go to your Account page and look under the Membership section. You'll find either a link that walks you through cancelling or instructions to contact your payment partner.
Switching to a package? Don't cancel
If you're moving to a package that includes Netflix, cancelling is the wrong move. Link your existing account to the package instead and you keep your preferences, downloads, My List and more. Search the Netflix Help Center for the name of your new package and follow the steps under How do I activate Netflix. Once linked, Netflix stops billing the payment method on file straight away, because the package covers it.
Pause for a month instead of cancelling
If you only want a break, pausing may suit you better. You keep watching until your next billing date. On that date you're not charged and your membership is paused for 1 month, after which you're charged your current plan price and can watch again. While it's paused, you can't stream or download, but you can still browse and add to My List.
- Go to the Cancel Membership page, signing in if you need to.
- Select Pause for 1 Month.
Pausing isn't available on every plan, as of October 2026, or with some payment methods, such as Direct Debit, gift cards and some partner payments. A week before the pause ends, you'll get the option to extend it by another month by selecting Extend Pause from the Ready to watch? banner on your Account page. Accounts can only be paused for a total of 3 months. If Extend Pause doesn't appear, you've likely hit that limit, or your main payment method is no longer a credit or debit card.
While your membership is paused, you can unpause or cancel at any time from your Account page in a web or mobile browser. To come back early, select Unpause Now from the same banner. You're charged straight away, your billing date moves and you can start watching immediately. If you link your account to a package while paused, it can take up to 24 hours to unpause.
Rejoining Netflix later
You can restart your account at any time. Netflix keeps your Viewing Activity for 24 months after the account closes, along with your recommendations, ratings, account details, gameplay history and game saves. For games that don't support cloud saves, the game and its data must still be installed on the device you played on. Downloads don't survive, so you'll need to download them again.

Stop anyone in the house restarting it
Here's the step most people skip. To make sure nobody in your household can restart Netflix without your permission, change your password after cancelling and tick the box that says Sign out of all devices. That changes your password and signs out every device still logged in to your account.
My verdict on cancelling Netflix
I'd cancel straight after a series ends rather than waiting for the renewal date, because you keep watching until the billing period runs out anyway. If you'll be back in a month or two, pause instead, as long as your payment method allows it. And whichever you choose, change your password with Sign out of all devices ticked. Before you go, check the current Netflix plans in case a different plan suits you better, see whether a Netflix free trial is still on offer, or browse other streaming services to try instead.
Frequently asked questions
Will Netflix charge me again after I cancel?
No. You won't be charged again unless you restart your account.
Does deleting the Netflix app cancel my membership?
No. Signing out of your account or deleting the Netflix app doesn't cancel it. The only way is Manage your membership, then Cancel, then Finish Cancellation.
Can I still watch Netflix after I cancel?
Yes. If you cancel with time left in your billing period, you can keep watching until the end of it. If your account is on hold, it closes immediately.
How long can I pause Netflix?
You can pause for 1 month at a time and extend it, but accounts can only be paused for a total of 3 months.
Why can't I see a cancel option on Netflix?
You're likely billed through a payment partner. Check the Membership section of your Account page for a cancellation link or instructions to contact your payment partner.
Does Netflix keep my profile if I rejoin?
Yes, for 24 months. Netflix keeps your Viewing Activity, recommendations, ratings, account details, gameplay history and game saves for 24 months after your account closes.
