Monzo Joint Account: Opening, Switching, Pots, Credit Scores and Closing

A Monzo joint account is a separate account you share with one other person, with its own account number and a debit card for each of you. You keep your personal Monzo account and card, and the other person can't see your personal account.

The point most people skip: a joint account links you on paper. Your credit scores stay separate and don't merge, but opening the account creates a financial association between you, so a missed payment or an unarranged overdraft on the joint account can affect both your individual scores. Monzo also splits ownership equally, so neither of you gets more control than the other. Its own advice is to only open one with someone you trust.

What you share and what stays private

FeatureHow it works on a Monzo joint account, as of October 2026
Who can open oneAny two people, not just couples: partners, siblings or flatmates
CardsBoth of you get a debit card, which looks different from your personal card
Account numberIts own unique number, so you can pay bills from it
Your personal accountStays private and isn't visible to the other owner
OwnershipSplit equally, with the same access to features for both
TransactionsThe app shows who made each one

Because the cards look different, it's easy to tell at the till which account you're spending from. Monzo's new Home screen gives you direct access to both your personal and joint accounts.

How to open a joint account in the app

  1. Tap the Home icon in the menu bar.
  2. Tap the plus icon in the top right of the screen.
  3. Tap Apply for a Joint Account.
  4. Pick your co-owner from your contacts, which works if they're saved in your phone and you have Payments with Friends switched on in your app settings.
  5. Or tap invite someone to create a unique link and send it to them.

That invite link expires after 24 hours for security. If your co-owner doesn't use it in time, you'll need to send a new one.

Paying from the right account

When you want to pay someone, or use Monzo Split, from a specific account, tap Payments at the bottom of your Home screen, tap the account name at the top left and choose Personal or Joint. It's a small step, but it's the one that stops a shared bill coming out of your personal balance.

Switching an existing joint account to Monzo

Monzo uses the Current Account Switch Service, a non-profit service that moves accounts between banks without branch visits or paperwork. You tell Monzo when you want to switch, and it gets it done in 7 working days, moving your balance and payments like Direct Debits and standing orders, and closing your old account for you.

Switching fromCan it move to Monzo?
A current accountYes, to a Monzo current account or a Monzo joint account
An old joint accountYes, to a Monzo joint account, but not to a Monzo current account
A sole trader or limited company accountYes, to a Monzo Business account

Before you start, have three things ready: the account number and sort code of the account you're leaving, the last 5 digits of your old card, and the last 5 digits of your partner's old card. Then tap the Home icon, tap the blue plus button in the top right and select Switch to Monzo.

Pots inside a joint account

Pots are how you set funds aside for shared goals. To make one, tap the plus icon in the top right corner, choose the type of Pot, personalise it and add a starting balance. Regular Pots let you skip that last step and fill it later.

Joint accounts and your credit file

Here's how Monzo explains the knock-on effects. If you apply for a personal loan on your own, a lender may look at the credit score of the other person on your joint account when it decides. If you apply for joint credit, such as a joint loan, overdraft or mortgage, lenders look at both scores, and the decision can affect each of your individual scores.

To end the link, close any joint financial products first, then ask each credit reference agency to end your financial association. Monzo names Equifax and TransUnion, and it's free to do.

Closing a Monzo joint account

  1. Move the whole balance out first. Monzo won't close a joint account with funds still in it.
  2. Tap the Help icon in the menu bar.
  3. Search for Closing your joint account.
  4. Tap Close account at the bottom of the article.

My verdict on Monzo joint accounts

I'd open one if you share bills or savings goals with someone you trust, because the separate card, separate account number and privacy of your personal account make the split clean. I'd think twice if your finances with that person are shaky, because the financial association means their missed payments can show up on your file, and unpicking it means closing joint products and contacting the agencies.
