To silence unknown callers on iPhone, go to Settings, tap Apps, tap Phone and set calls from unknown numbers to Silence. Those calls go straight to voicemail and show in your Recents list, and only callers in your Contacts or Recents, or who've shared their number in Mail or texted you from it, still ring through.
The catch is who counts as known. Apple's support article on missed calls, published in July 2026, lists Silence Unknown Callers as one of the settings to check when calls aren't getting through, and warns that calls from some third-party apps might not go through either. A new dentist, a courier or a school ringing from a number you've never saved will land in voicemail. If there's someone you can't afford to miss, add their number to Contacts.
Silence, Call Screening, filters and blocking compared
| Option | What happens to the call | Where to set it |
|---|---|---|
| Never | Call Screening is off and your iPhone rings for unsaved numbers | Settings, Apps, Phone |
| Ask Reason for Calling | Your iPhone answers, asks the caller for their name and reason, then rings and shares their answer | Settings, Apps, Phone |
| Silence | Unsaved numbers are silenced, sent to voicemail and shown in Recents | Settings, Apps, Phone |
| Unknown Callers filter | Calls from unknown numbers are removed from Recents and moved to an Unknown Callers list | Settings, Apps, Phone |
| Spam filter | Calls your carrier flags as potential spam or fraud are silenced, sent to voicemail and moved to a Spam list | Settings, Apps, Phone |
| Block Contact | That person can't reach you in Phone, Messages or FaceTime | Phone app, or Settings then Privacy & Security |
How to silence unknown callers
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap Apps, then tap Phone.
- Find the choices for calls from unknown numbers: Never, Ask Reason for Calling and Silence.
- Choose Silence.
Those three are one setting, so you pick one. You can't run Silence and Ask Reason for Calling side by side.
Ask Reason for Calling is the middle ground
Call Screening answers calls from unknown numbers automatically without interrupting you. Once the caller shares their name and why they're calling, your iPhone rings and passes on their answer, so you decide whether to pick up. When it answers, Siri speaks in your iPhone's default language. I like this for anyone who gets real calls from new numbers, like freelancers, parents and anyone booking tradespeople.
Filter unknown and spam calls
Filtering tidies your call history as well as cutting the noise. Turn on the Unknown Callers and Spam filters in the same Phone settings. To see what's been filtered, open the Phone app. In the unified layout tap Calls, in the classic layout tap Recents, then tap Unknown Callers or Spam.
If a caller you want ends up in the wrong list, tap Unknown Callers, tap Mark as Known next to their call, then tap Mark as Known again. Future calls from them won't be sent to that list. To reverse it, tap the number and tap Mark as Unknown at the bottom of the contact card.
Turn on caller ID for business calls
Before you silence everything, switch on call identification. iPhone can name incoming callers using information from Apple Business Connect, supported carriers and supported caller ID apps.
- Open Settings, tap Apps, then tap Phone.
- Tap Call Blocking & Identification.
- Turn on Business Call Identification, Call Identification apps, or both.
FaceTime has its own settings
FaceTime keeps its own version of these switches. Go to Settings, tap Apps, then tap FaceTime, and turn on Silence Unknown Callers there. FaceTime calls from unknown numbers are then silenced, sent to voicemail and shown in Recents, while people in your contacts, recent outgoing calls and Siri Suggestions still ring. The same screen has an Unknown Callers filter, which moves missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers into their own list, and a FaceTime Spam filter that silences spam calls and moves them to a Spam list.
When you know exactly who you don't want
Silencing is for strangers. For one persistent number, blocking is the cleaner fix because it stops them in Phone, Messages and FaceTime.
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap Contacts, tap the contact, then tap Block Contact.
You can also go to Settings, tap Privacy & Security, tap Blocked Contacts, then tap Add Blocked Contact. There's more on what happens next in my guide to blocking a number on iPhone, and if you blocked someone by mistake, here's how to unblock them again.

Missing calls you wanted?
If people say they can't get through, Apple suggests working through these settings and testing after each one:
- Silence Unknown Callers: in Settings, tap Apps, then Phone. If it's on, add the caller's number to Contacts.
- Do Not Disturb: in Settings, tap Focus, then Do Not Disturb, and make sure it's off.
- Blocked numbers: in Settings, tap Apps, then Phone, then Blocked Contacts.
- Call Forwarding: in Settings, tap Apps, then Phone, then Call Forwarding, and make sure it's off.
- Airplane Mode: turn it on and off, waiting five seconds in between.
Reset Network Settings, under Transfer or Reset iPhone, is a bigger step because it erases saved Wi-Fi passwords, preferred networks, and VPN and APN settings. I'd leave it until the simple checks are done.
My verdict
I'd use Ask Reason for Calling rather than plain Silence if you ever get calls you need from numbers you haven't saved. You keep the spam out without missing the plumber. Go for Silence if your phone is mostly friends and family and you're happy checking voicemail. Either way, turn on the Spam filter, switch on call identification, and save the numbers you can't miss to Contacts.

Callers in your Contacts or Recents, or who've shared their number in Mail or sent you a message from that number.
