To verify your age on Discord, go to User Settings, then Account Status, then Confirm Age, and pick one of the methods offered, such as your app store age range, a credit card, a video selfie or an ID scan. Most people never need to, because Discord places you in an age group automatically.
That's the catch. Discord uses an age estimation model to sort most users into an age group, and you only need to confirm if you want age-restricted content, spaces or settings and aren't already confirmed as an adult, or if you've been put in the wrong group. Real Discord age checks only happen inside the app. Discord never asks you to confirm your age by email or text, and it only receives an age result, never your ID or your selfie.
When you need to confirm your age
- You try to open age-restricted content, a restricted space or a restricted setting, and you're not already confirmed as an adult.
- Discord has put you in the wrong age group.
- In some places, local laws mean you may be asked to share an age range through Apple or Google when you open the app.
If you're wondering what the minimum ages on Discord are in the first place, I've covered that separately in my guide to the Discord age requirement.
How to verify your age on Discord, step by step
- Open Discord and go to User Settings.
- Tap or click Account Status, then Confirm Age. You'll also see this option in the prompt that appears when you hit age-restricted content.
- Choose a method from the list. What you see depends on your region, your device and any earlier attempts.
- Follow the steps for that method.
- Wait for a DM from Discord's official account with your result. Your status also shows in Account Status.
On mobile, you need app version 343.0 or later to see your age-group status, so update the app first if the option is missing.
Every age verification method, and what it shares
| Method | What happens | What Discord says about privacy |
|---|---|---|
| Apple or Google age range | You share the age range from your app store account | Your exact birthdate isn't shared |
| Credit card | k-ID checks you own the card, using Stripe | Credit cards only; Discord never sees your card details |
| Video selfie | Your face is used to estimate your age on your device | Nothing leaves your device |
| ID scan | k-ID scans a government ID plus a selfie | Both are deleted as soon as your age is confirmed |
| Google Wallet | Uses a passport saved in Wallet | Only your age group and country are shared |
| AgeKey | A reusable age passkey you set up once | Set up through k-ID and reusable on other services |
What each method involves
Credit card. The check is handled by k-ID using Stripe. A small temporary charge may be placed on your card and refunded within 14 business days. It has to be a credit card, not a debit or prepaid card, because those can be issued to under-18s.
Video selfie. Facial age estimation runs entirely on your device. Discord says neither it nor k-ID sees or stores the video.
ID scan. k-ID scans your government ID and a selfie. Both are deleted as soon as your age is confirmed, and they're never linked to your Discord account. Discord only gets the age result.
Google Wallet. This uses a passport saved in Google Wallet, and only passports from Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and the US are accepted.
AgeKey. A reusable age passkey you set up once through k-ID, using a selfie, ID or credit card. You can then use it on other services that accept it, so you're not repeating the check every time.
If Discord gets your age wrong
- Check your result in Account Status. Sometimes Discord asks for a second method before it confirms.
- If the result is still wrong, choose Retry in Account Status and pick a different method.
- Keep in mind there may be a limit on how many times you can retry each method.
- If your account was banned because Discord thinks you're under the minimum age, use Discord's appeal instructions, which are linked from its age help.
Discord's page also notes a fixed bug. Some accounts showed as unconfirmed, or couldn't open age-restricted servers on certain phones. That was resolved on 23 September, and the fix is to close and refresh the app.

What Discord does with your age
Discord says it receives an age signal only, not your name, your ID or your selfie. Your age group isn't shown on your profile or to other members. Discord also says it uses these signals for safety only, such as making sure teens don't see adult ads, and not to target ads at you.
Watch out for age verification scams
Discord's rule here is simple: it never asks you to confirm your age by email or text, and age checks happen only in the app. If you get a message with a link asking you to verify, don't click it. If it came from someone on Discord, report them.
My advice
Don't verify unless Discord asks you to. If it does, the app store age range is the lightest option, because your exact birthdate isn't shared. If you'd rather nothing leaves your phone, the video selfie runs on your device. And if you're in the UK and wondering why other sites ask for your age too, my guide to UK age verification explains what's behind it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I verify my age on Discord?
Go to User Settings, then Account Status, then Confirm Age, and choose a method such as your app store age range, a credit card, a video selfie, an ID scan, Google Wallet or AgeKey.
Does everyone need to verify their age on Discord?
Usually not. Discord places most users in an age group automatically. You only need to confirm if you want age-restricted content or settings, or if you're in the wrong group.
Does Discord keep my ID or selfie?
No. Discord says the ID and selfie used in an ID scan are deleted as soon as your age is confirmed, and Discord only receives the age result.
Why won't Discord accept my debit card for age verification?
Discord only accepts credit cards for this check, because debit and prepaid cards can be issued to under-18s.
Will Discord ever ask me to verify my age by email?
No. Discord says it never asks you to confirm your age by email or text. Age checks only happen in the app, so don't click links in those messages.
