Discord Server Tags: How to Get One for Your Server and How to Wear It

A Discord server tag is a 4-character label with a small icon that members can show next to their name across Discord. As of October 2026, a server owner or admin turns it on as a Boost perk that costs 3 Boosts, and members then choose to wear it from their profile settings.

Here's the catch. Those 3 Boosts have to be spare, on top of whatever is holding up your server level, so a small server only gets a tag if its members boost it. The tag also disappears from every member's profile the moment the server drops below the Boosts it needs, and if you rename it later, every member has to re-apply it.

Tags aren't unique. Two different servers can use the same four characters, so the icon and colour you pick matter more than you might think.

How to turn on a server tag

  1. Make sure the server has 3 Boosts that aren't already counted towards a level.
  2. Open the Server Boosts tab. Only admins can see it.
  3. Find Server Tags and click Enable Perk.
  4. Go to Server Settings then Server Tag.
  5. Choose the tag name, the badge and the colour, then save.

Spaces, emoji and some characters aren't supported in the name. Members can't change the colour you choose, so pick one that reads well on both light and dark themes.

If the perk won't turn on even though your Boost count looks high enough, the Boosts are probably already holding up your server level. Discord applies new Boosts to levels first.

How members wear a server tag

  • Desktop or browser: User Settings, then Profiles, then Server Tag, then Select.
  • Mobile: tap your avatar, then Edit Profile, then Server Tag.
  • To remove it: tap the X next to the tag.

Each person can only show one tag at a time, so your tag is competing with every other server they belong to. You also can't restrict which members are allowed to wear it.

Badge packs

Once Server Tags are on, you can add a badge pack for more icon choices. Creepy Crawlies costs 2 Boosts, Pet and Plant cost 3 each, and Flex costs 5. Only one badge can be on the tag at a time. Remember these also come out of your spare Boosts, so check your count first.

Why tags help a server grow

This is the part most people overlook. When someone taps a tag, Discord opens the Server Profile, which shows your name, icon, banner, traits, description and games. From there they can join, depending on how you've set up access:

Join settingWhat happens when someone taps your tag
Invite Only (the default)They need an invite link, which can have an expiry and a use limit
Apply to JoinThey answer your questions and an admin approves them. Pending applicants can't see your content
DiscoverableThey can join from the profile. Needs Community server status and Discord's discovery safety requirements

You customise the Server Profile on desktop or browser only, though people can view it on mobile. Members with the Kick Members permission can create invite links that skip applications, so check who has it. My guide to making roles on Discord covers permissions.

What happens if your Boosts drop

If the server falls below the 3 Boosts the perk needs, the tag is removed from every member's profile straight away. There's no grace period for this one. If your tag matters to your community, keep a Boost or two in hand.

My verdict

A server tag is free advertising every time a member chats in another server, and it leads straight to your Server Profile. It's worth it if you've got the spare Boosts, but pick the name carefully, because changing it later means asking everyone to put it back on. If you're still building your community, start with making a Discord server and come back to tags once your members are boosting.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get a server tag on Discord?

A server owner or admin opens the Server Boosts tab, clicks Enable Perk on Server Tags, which costs 3 unallocated Boosts, then sets the name, badge and colour in Server Settings.

How many characters can a Discord server tag have?

Up to 4, using letters, numbers and certain special characters. Spaces, emoji and some characters aren't supported.

How do I wear a server tag on Discord?

On desktop, go to User Settings, then Profiles, then Server Tag, and pick one. On mobile, tap your avatar, then Edit Profile, then Server Tag.
