YouTube community posts let you share text, images, polls, quizzes or a video with your audience between uploads, and YouTube says they can give your channel more reach and engagement. To make one, sign in, click Create, then Create post, pick the type, and post it now or schedule it.
Two things catch creators out. Quizzes you add to videos in YouTube Studio can't be edited once they're saved, so a typo means deleting and starting again. And there's a cap on how many posts a channel can make in 24 hours that YouTube doesn't put a number on; if you hit the limit-reached error, it clears after 24 hours. Posts also aren't the same thing as YouTube Communities, which are for subscribers only.
Every post type and its limits
| Post type | Limits, as of October 2026 | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Text | Plain text, with @mentions of other channels | Can't be combined with a poll |
| Image | Up to 10 images, 16 MB each, JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP | 1:1 is suggested, because that's how the feed shows them |
| Poll | A question plus up to 4 options; text options 65 characters, image captions 36 | Text polls and image polls both work |
| Quiz | Up to 4 answers, 80 characters each, or 30 with an image | One correct answer, plus an optional explanation of up to 500 characters |
| Video | Search, paste a URL or pick from your channel | Posting another creator's video may notify them |
How to create a community post
- Sign in to YouTube.
- Click Create, then Create post.
- Type your text, or choose video, poll, quiz or image.
- To mention another channel, type @ and their handle, or use the channel name. That channel may be notified.
- Click Post, or schedule it for later.
Mentions are worth using on purpose. If you're thanking a guest or pointing people to a collaborator, the mention can put your post in front of the person you're talking about.
How to schedule a post
- Build your post as normal.
- Click the down arrow next to Post.
- Choose Schedule Post.
- Pick the date, the time and the time zone.
Set the time zone deliberately. If most of your viewers live in another country, schedule for their morning, not yours. Scheduling is also the easiest way to stay under the 24-hour cap: spread a week's posts across the week instead of firing them off in one sitting.
Polls or quizzes: which to use
They look alike but do different jobs, and since text posts can't be combined with polls, any context your audience needs has to fit inside the poll question itself. A poll asks your audience what they think: a question plus up to four options, with 65 characters for each text option or 36 for each image caption. A quiz tests what they know: up to four answers of 80 characters each, or 30 with an image, one marked correct, and an optional explanation of up to 500 characters.
I'd use polls to find out what your audience wants you to make next, and quizzes to tease a video's topic or reward the people who've watched it. Don't skip the explanation on a quiz. It's where the teaching happens, and 500 characters is enough to say why the right answer is right.
Image and video posts
Image posts take up to 10 images, each up to 16 MB, as JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP. Go square, because 1:1 is the suggested ratio and that's how the feed shows them. Be careful with what you post: an image that breaks YouTube's rules can get the post removed and a strike applied to your channel.
For a video post, search for the video, paste its URL or pick one from your own channel. If you share another creator's video, YouTube may notify that uploader, which makes it a friendly opener for a collaboration. One limit to know: a video that's already in a viewer's feed may not show again in a post, so I'd use video posts to bring back older uploads people missed, rather than repeat the one you posted yesterday.
Quizzes inside your videos
Separate from community posts, YouTube Studio lets you add quizzes to the videos themselves: up to 10 per video, each set at a timestamp. Add them at the Video Elements step when you upload, or later from Details or the Editor. If you're new to Studio, here's what YouTube Studio does and where things live.
Saved quizzes can't be edited. If you spot a mistake, delete the quiz and create it again, so proofread the question, the answers and the timestamp before you click save.

The 24-hour cap and your activity history
YouTube limits how many posts a channel can make in any 24 hours. If you see a limit-reached error, there's nothing broken and nothing to fix; it clears after 24 hours. Your activity history for posts can only be viewed on a computer, and it's kept for 30 days, so if you want a record of what you posted further back than a month, keep your own list.
My verdict on community posts
I'd post something between uploads every week, because YouTube itself says posts can give more reach and engagement, and a poll or an image takes far less work than a video. Schedule them in batches, use polls to ask what to make next, and save quizzes for questions you've checked twice. Skip text posts that say nothing new; a poll gives people a reason to tap, and an image stops the scroll.
