Claude Enterprise: How the Seat Plus Usage Billing Works

Claude Enterprise is Anthropic's plan for organisations that need advanced security and compliance controls, and as of October 2026 the seat costs $20 per person per month, billed annually, with a 20-seat minimum. That seat fee buys access only: every token people use in Chat, Claude Code and Cowork is billed on top at standard API rates.

That second sentence is the bit most buyers miss. Enterprise doesn't work like the Team plan, where a seat comes with a usage allowance. Here's how the bill is built, the two ways to buy it, and the set-up decisions that are hard to undo once you've made them.

What an Enterprise seat gets you

Enterprise includes everything in the Team plan, plus extra security and compliance features. Each seat gives a person Claude on web, desktop and mobile, along with Claude Code and Cowork. Connectors for Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, GitHub, Microsoft 365 and Slack let people search and pull in context without uploading files by hand.

The security and admin features are the reason most organisations move up. Anthropic lists these for Enterprise:

  • Audit logs and SCIM for user provisioning.
  • Custom data retention controls.
  • The Compliance API, which pulls activity logs, chat histories and file content, filtered by user and time.
  • The Analytics API, for aggregated engagement and adoption metrics.
  • Customer-managed encryption keys and US-only inference.
  • Role-based access, IP allowlisting and network-level access control.
  • Claude Security, shown on the pricing page as a beta.

How the seat plus usage billing works

Anthropic puts it plainly: the seat fee covers access, and all usage is billed separately at API rates. There are no per-seat usage limits and no included token allowance, and the cost of usage scales with the model and the task. A team that loves Claude will cost more than the seat price suggests, and a team that barely touches it will cost little more than the seats.

Admins can set spend limits at organisation level and for individual users, which is the control I'd switch on before anyone logs in. One extra cost to know: if you turn on US-only inference, usage is billed at 1.1x standard API rates for Claude Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.6 and later models.

Prices are Anthropic's list prices as of October 2026. Team Standard is $25 a seat on monthly billing, and Team Premium is $100 billed annually or $125 monthly. Team Standard seats include 1.25x the Pro per-session usage allowance and Premium seats 6.25x. Team tops out at 150 seats, and larger organisations move to Enterprise. My guide to the Claude Team plan covers those seats in detail, and every Claude plan and price sits on one page if you're comparing the lot.

Self-serve or sales-assisted: two ways to buy

You get the same features and the same seat price either way. What changes is how you pay for usage.

Enterprise is also sold through Amazon Web Services. An AWS purchase bills like a sales-assisted plan, monthly in arrears, but you pay through AWS.

The billing traps to know before you sign

  • Self-serve credits are shared across the whole organisation. When they hit zero, usage stops for everyone until an Owner, Primary Owner or a custom role with Billing set to Can manage buys more, under Organization settings, then Usage. Sales-assisted plans have no balance to run down, because usage goes onto a monthly invoice.
  • On self-serve, you can't remove seats mid-term, and any seats you add are charged pro rata straight away.
  • Paying by ACH on self-serve means the plan isn't activated until the payment arrives, which can take up to five business days. Credits can't auto-reload on ACH either, so add a card if you want that.
  • On sales-assisted plans, invoices of $50,000 or more can only be paid by bank transfer, ACH or wire.
  • The older seat types, Chat-only, Chat plus Claude Code, and Standard or Premium, aren't available on new contracts. Existing ones move to the single Enterprise seat at renewal.

Data retention: the setting you can't take back

By default, Enterprise keeps data indefinitely. A Primary Owner or Owner can set a custom period under Organization settings, then Data and Privacy, with a minimum of 30 days, and a month counts as 30 days. Retention is measured from last activity, not creation date.

Here's the trap. Shortening the period schedules everything outside the new range for permanent deletion as soon as you save, and it can't be recovered. Project retention overrides chat retention for chats inside a project, and simply viewing a project doesn't reset its clock. Every retention change and deletion is tracked in the audit logs, so at least you'll know who did it.

Setting up SSO without boxing yourself in

SSO runs through a parent organization, which Anthropic creates automatically for Enterprise. You have to verify your domain before you can configure SSO, and each parent organization can link to only one identity provider. If a merge proposal comes in, it has to be approved within 14 days. Parent organizations manage identity and access only, not billing.

Rolling out Claude Enterprise, step by step

  1. Count your seats. Under 50, self-serve is your route; at 50 or more you can buy through Sales and get monthly invoicing.
  2. Verify your company domain so SSO can be configured.
  3. Pick your one identity provider before you connect it.
  4. Decide on a retention period before people start working, because shortening it later deletes data for good.
  5. Set spend limits for the organisation and for individual users.
  6. On self-serve, keep a card on file so credits can auto-reload and usage never stops mid-week.
  7. Approve any merge proposal within 14 days.

My walkthrough in my Claude Code Subagents breakdown picks up where this one stops.

Is Claude Enterprise worth it?

I'd buy Enterprise if you need audit logs, SCIM, the Compliance API or custom retention, or if you've outgrown Team's 150 seats. If you're smaller and don't need those controls, Team is the simpler buy, because usage comes with the seat. If you do go Enterprise, budget for usage as its own line, set spend limits on day one, and if you're at 50 seats or more, I'd go sales-assisted so a run-dry credit balance can never stop the whole company.

Buying the seats is the easy part. Getting a team using Claude well, and keeping the usage bill sensible, is where I help. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement, AI automation and GEO, which is about getting your business seen and cited in AI answers. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams, telecom companies and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
