MCP Servers (2026): 10 Picked by What Your Agent Touches

The best MCP servers give your AI agent the exact access a job needs and nothing more, whether that's a browser, search, error logs, a database, tickets or your workspace. Pick by what the agent has to touch first, then by how the server signs in: OAuth, an API key or keyless access.

If you've already got an AI app that can use tools, the next question is what to plug into it. An MCP server is the connector that hands your agent one set of abilities. If the protocol itself is new to you, my explainer on what MCP is and how it works covers it in plain English, so this page sticks to choosing the servers.

The ten below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. Each description comes from the server's own docs or GitHub page, as of Oct 2026, and they're grouped further down by the job they do.

Ten MCP servers and the access they need

The free plan column only says Yes where the server's own page makes it plain. Two here are open source under licences that let you use them free. Not stated means the page doesn't spell out a free plan either way. Exa's page says new accounts get free credits at signup, and Zapier's says building Zaps is free from any surface, including through its MCP server. Check the current terms before you build on any of them.

Each server and what it reaches

Brave Search MCP

Best for: Web, local business and place searches from an MIT-licensed server that wraps the Brave Search API.

Browserbase MCP

Best for: Giving your MCP client a hosted browser to work in, run through Stagehand, so the browsing doesn't happen on your own machine.

Exa MCP

Best for: Code and web search from a hosted server that works in any MCP client, with no API key needed to get started.

Firecrawl MCP

Best for: Pulling clean page content into an agent, with a choice of keyless access, an account sign-in or an API key.

Linear MCP

Best for: Reading and updating issues from your assistant, set up through OAuth 2.1 or a bearer token, in any client that supports remote MCP.

Notion MCP

Best for: A remote server hosted by Notion that reads and updates your workspace within what your account can access, after OAuth sign-in.

Playwright MCP

Best for: Letting an agent drive a real web page through structured accessibility snapshots, so it doesn't need screenshots or a visually tuned model.

Sentry MCP

Best for: Searching errors, analysing performance and triaging issues from your AI assistant, with OAuth on every connection.

Supabase MCP

Best for: Database work from an agent, as long as you scope it to one project and switch on read-only mode before connecting production.

Zapier MCP

Best for: Teams that want one connection reaching 9,000+ apps instead of wiring up a separate server for each one.

Start with the blast radius, not popularity

Most lists of MCP servers go by how popular they are. The more useful question is how much damage a server could do if your agent gets something wrong. The Supabase docs put it plainly: production projects can contain sensitive data, so before you connect one, scope the server to that project, enable read-only mode and restrict the available feature groups.

That's the line I'd pin above any database connection. A server that can write to live customer records is a very different thing from one that can only read search results, and the server you can restrict is the one you want.

Match the server to what your agent has to touch

  • A web page: Playwright MCP drives a real page from its structure rather than screenshots, and Browserbase MCP gives your client a hosted browser to work in.
  • Search and page content: Brave Search MCP covers web, local and place searches, Exa MCP handles web and code search, and Firecrawl MCP pulls clean page content into the agent.
  • Errors in your app: Sentry MCP lets the assistant search errors, look at performance and triage issues.
  • A database: Supabase MCP, with the project scoping and read-only switch described above.
  • Tickets and issues: Linear MCP reads and updates issues from a client that supports remote MCP.
  • Lots of apps at once: Zapier MCP lets your agent search more than 9,000 apps for the right action.
  • Your workspace: Notion MCP is a remote server hosted by Notion that works within what your account can access.

Check how each server signs in

Sign-in is the second filter, and it tells you how much you can lock down. Sentry's server uses OAuth on every connection. Linear's interactive setup uses OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration, and you can authenticate with a bearer token instead. Notion's server only works after you authorise a connection with OAuth.

At the other end, Exa offers a hosted server that works in any MCP client, and no API key is required to get started. Firecrawl lets you choose keyless access, an account sign-in or an API key. Supabase has you create a personal access token and pass it to the server as a header.

Keyless is quick for trying something out. For anything that touches your own data, I'd rather have a sign-in I can withdraw and a scope I can narrow.

Hosted servers versus ones on your machine

Several servers here are hosted for you. Exa, Notion and Linear each give you a remote address to connect to, and Browserbase runs the browser for you rather than on your laptop. A hosted server means there's nothing to install, but your client has to support remote MCP servers to use one, so check that before you pick.

If you'd rather wire one connection than ten, Zapier's page says your agent searches its 9,000+ apps and 66,000+ triggers and actions to find the right tools. That's a lot of reach from one place, which is exactly why it needs the same care over permissions as a database server. If what you're after is one front door to several AI models rather than to your apps, that's a different product, and my guide to LLM gateways covers it.

Do you make an MCP server? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing MCP servers

Start with one job and one server. Write down what your agent has to touch, choose the server built for that, and give it the narrowest sign-in and scope it'll accept. Read-only first, and write access only once you've seen it behave.

Add servers one at a time after that, so you always know which one did what. If you're building the agent itself rather than adding tools to one you've already got, my guide to the best AI agent builder platforms is the place to start.

Frequently asked questions

What is an MCP server?

It's a connector that gives an AI app one set of tools, such as a browser, search or a database, through the Model Context Protocol.

Are MCP servers safe to connect to my data?

They're as safe as the access you give them. Scope each server to one project where you can, start in read-only mode, and prefer servers that sign in with OAuth so you control what they reach.

Do I need an API key for every MCP server?

No. Some hosted servers let you start without one, others use OAuth, and some take an API key or a personal access token. Each server's docs say which.

Can I use an MCP server without installing anything?

Yes, if it's hosted. A remote server is an address your client connects to, as long as your client supports remote MCP servers.

Are these MCP servers free?

Two here are open source under licences that let you use them free. For the rest, check each server's own page, because free access and limits vary.
