A WordPress directory plugin turns your site into a searchable set of listings, such as local businesses, classified ads, job boards or curated links. The plugins share a label but not a job, so start with what you're listing. Ten free plugins follow in no particular order, with directory numbers as of Oct 2026.
Directory sites come in more shapes than most people expect. A local business directory, a classified ads board, a job board, a real estate portal and a list of useful links are all directories, and each needs different fields, filters and pages.
The ten plugins below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, each described from its own WordPress.org directory page. If you'd like to see a directory in action first, browse my free website directory.
Directory plugins at a glance
Every plugin in this table is free in the WordPress.org plugin directory, as of Oct 2026, which is why the free plan column says Yes. Makers may sell extensions on their own sites, and those aren't part of this comparison.

Pick by the job, not the label
These ten do different jobs under one label. Business Directory Plugin, GeoDirectory and Directorist build business directories, Classified Listing and Advanced Classifieds and Directory Pro are classifieds, Simple Link Directory curates links, and Name Directory describes itself as a name directory (glossary), not a business listing site.
- Local businesses with maps: look for map support and local business fields.
- Classified ads or vehicles: a classifieds plugin, some with car and real estate set-ups ready to go.
- Job boards: several here name job directories or job listings boards in their descriptions.
- A curated list of links: a link directory, not a business one.
- A glossary or list of names: a name directory with search built in.
Why a full address matters for local listings
Google Search Central's LocalBusiness structured data documentation lists address, as a PostalAddress, as a required property. A listing without a full address can't carry that markup, however good the rest of the page looks.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
So if you're building a local directory, make the address fields compulsory from day one and favour a plugin that captures the address for every listing. Going back to fix old listings later is a miserable job, and it's the kind that never quite gets finished.
Ratings from many people or from few
Whatever you build, pair it with one of the SEO plugins so search engines can read it clearly.
Search, maps and spam protection
Beyond the job itself, three features separate a directory people use from one they give up on: search, maps and spam protection. Several plugins here name a search builder or integrated search, two name Google Maps or maps, and two name reCAPTCHA, which matters once strangers can submit listings through a front-end form. Check the description for each feature you need rather than assuming it's there.
That maps-based business directory has the most ratings in the list, 716 at 96/100, as of Oct 2026, while WP Directory Kit is 98/100 from only 35. A high score from a small number of ratings is a reason to look closer, not a reason to dismiss it or to treat it as settled.

My plain advice on directory plugins
Write down what you're listing and the fields each listing needs before you look at a single plugin. Then pick the one built for that job, whether that's businesses, classifieds, links or names. For local listings, insist on a full address in every entry so the pages can be marked up for search.
Local directories work best alongside clear local markup, and my service area schema markup cheat sheet shows how that side fits together.

Frequently asked questions
What can I build with a WordPress directory plugin?
Business directories, classified ads, job boards, real estate portals, link directories and glossaries are all covered by plugins on this list.
What's the difference between a directory and a classifieds plugin?
A directory lists businesses or members for people to find. A classifieds plugin lists ads for things like cars, pets or property. Some plugins here do both.
Does a business directory need structured data?
It helps search engines read each listing. Google's LocalBusiness structured data lists the address as a required property, so capture a full address for every business.
Can a directory plugin show listings on a map?
Some can. One plugin here names Google Maps in its description and another is built for local directories with maps.
Are these directory plugins free?
All ten are free plugins in the WordPress.org plugin directory, as of Oct 2026.
