AI Question Generators (2026): 10 Tools for Question Banks

An AI question generator reads text you give it, such as a chapter, a policy or a set of notes, and drafts questions from it with answers. The good ones let you edit every question and keep it for next time. Ten tools follow in no particular order, for teachers, trainers and HR teams building a question bank.

Most people searching for a question generator don't want a game. They want a bank of decent questions they can trust, pull from and reuse: for a unit test, a staff induction or a revision session. That's a different job from a quick quiz, and it needs more checking.

The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website or help pages. If you'd rather make flashcards from your notes, my guide to AI flashcard makers that work from your own notes covers that side.

The free plan column comes from each tool's own website or help pages, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version or free use. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the page didn't name either, so check the tool's site before you sign up.

The answer key is where question banks go wrong

The Department for Education's guidance on generative AI in education says AI-produced content could be inaccurate, inappropriate or unsafe, biased, taken out of context, out of date or unreliable. It also says these tools can produce false information presented as fact, which it calls hallucination.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

In a question bank, that risk hides in the answer key. A badly worded question is easy to spot when you read it. A wrong answer marked as correct slips through, gets reused term after term, and quietly marks good answers down. So whoever owns the bank has to read every question and check every answer before it reaches a learner or a candidate.

To put those questions into one exam paper, use a full test generator.

Not only for classrooms

Question generators aren't only a teacher's tool. Questgen's own page names HR teams as well as teachers, and the same approach works for a staff policy check, a compliance refresher or an onboarding quiz for new starters. Upload the policy, generate the questions, then ask the person who owns that policy to check the answers.

For a small business, that's a quick way to find out whether the handbook has landed with your team, without writing a test from scratch.

Building a bank you can reuse

  1. Generate from your own material, not a bare topic, so the questions match what you taught or wrote.
  2. Read each question with its answer, and fix or delete anything you wouldn't put your name to.
  3. Tag every question by topic and difficulty, so you can pull a fair mix later.
  4. Keep the checked version somewhere you control, not only inside the tool.
  5. Retire questions that everyone gets right or everyone gets wrong, because they tell you nothing.

My plain advice on picking a question generator

Pick the tool that reads the material you already have, whether that's slides, a PDF or a policy, and lets you edit and export what it writes. Then treat every answer key as unchecked until you've read it yourself. A small bank of questions you trust beats a huge one you don't.

Teachers who want more of their evenings back can try my ChatGPT prompts for teachers who are short on time for planning, feedback and parent emails.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI question generator?

It's a tool that drafts questions and answers from text you give it, such as notes, a chapter or a policy document. Most let you edit the questions before you use them.

Can AI write questions from my own notes?

Yes. Several tools here generate questions from pasted text, uploaded files or a textbook, so the questions stay close to what you taught.

Are AI-generated answer keys always right?

No. The Department for Education warns that generative AI can present false information as fact, so read every answer before the questions reach anyone.

Can HR teams use a question generator?

Yes. The same tools that draft classroom questions can turn a staff policy or training guide into a short check for new starters.

Is there a free AI question generator?

A couple of tools here name a free plan on their own page, and others offer a trial, so check the free plan column before you sign up.
