The only sure way to know if someone blocked you on X (Twitter) is to visit their profile while you're logged in. X doesn't send a notification when you're blocked, but its Help Center confirms that if you visit the profile of an account that blocked you, you'll see that you've been blocked. Signs like vanished DMs or a missing Follow button only point to it.
That's why so-called Twitter block checkers aren't much use. The answer is sitting on the person's profile, and X shows it to you for free. The trick is knowing what a block looks like compared with a mute, a protected account or a deleted one, because those can feel similar from the outside.
The one place X tells you that you're blocked
- Log in to the X account you think was blocked.
- Go to the other person's profile. Search their @username or open a link to their profile.
- Look at the profile. If they've blocked you, X tells you so on the page.
X's Help Center puts it plainly: blocked accounts don't get a notification, but if a blocked account visits the profile of the account that blocked it, it will see it's been blocked. That makes block the opposite of mute, which X describes as invisible to the muted account.
Blocked, muted, protected or gone: how to tell
| What you see | Most likely reason | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Their profile says you're blocked | They blocked you | X shows a blocked account this message on the profile |
| Everything looks normal, but they never react | They muted you, or they're just quiet | Mute is invisible to the muted account |
| You see a Follow request option and no posts | Their posts are protected | Protected posts show only to approved followers |
| The profile doesn't exist | The account was deactivated, suspended or renamed | None of these is a block |
| Your Follow button shows Blocked | You blocked them | X replaces Follow with a Blocked button on accounts you've blocked |
Signs that point to a block (but don't prove it)
If you can't check the profile for some reason, these clues come straight from what X says a blocked account can't do. Any one of them on its own could mean something else. Together, they're a strong hint.
- You can't follow them. X says blocked accounts can't follow the account that blocked them.
- You've been unfollowed. If you followed each other, a block makes you unfollow each other. Unblocking doesn't restore it.
- You can't send them a DM. Blocked accounts can't send Direct Messages to the person who blocked them.
- You can't like, reply or repost. X says blocked accounts can't engage with the blocker's posts.
- You can't add them to a List or tag them in a photo. Both are on X's list of things a block stops.
A failed DM can also be a privacy setting. Plenty of people only accept messages from accounts they follow, so check the profile before you assume the worst. My guide on how to DM someone on X explains who can message whom.
Can you still see their posts if they blocked you?
This surprises most people. X's Help Center says that if your posts are public, accounts you've blocked can still see them. They just can't engage. So the same works in reverse: if someone with a public account blocks you, being able to see their posts doesn't mean you aren't blocked.
If their account is protected, it's different. X says protected posts show only to followers, and a block removes you as a follower, so you won't see them at all.
Can you still report someone who blocked you?
Yes. X says you can report an account that has blocked you. You can also report its posts, but only the posts that mention you. If the account has protected its posts and you don't follow it, you can't report those posts.
How to check if you blocked someone by mistake
It happens. When you visit the profile of an account you've blocked, X replaces the Follow button with a Blocked button, and hides their posts until you click Yes, view profile. To undo it, tap the Blocked button and confirm. My guide to unblocking someone on X walks through it on web, iPhone and Android. Remember you'll need to follow them again, because the block removed the follow.
Do Twitter block checker tools work?
I wouldn't bother. The only signal X confirms is the message on the person's profile, and you can see that yourself in a few seconds. I'd never connect my X account to an unknown app just to find out something the profile already shows me, because giving a stranger's app access to your account is a bigger risk than not knowing. Check the profile, and you have your answer.
The signs look different elsewhere, as the same check on TikTok explains.

My advice
Look once, then let it go. If the profile says you're blocked, that's their call, and X won't tell you why. Pushing back from a second account or asking mutual followers to pass messages on is the kind of thing that turns a quiet block into a report. If the block feels unfair and it's affecting your business, put your energy into the people who do want to hear from you. That's where your growth is anyway.
If the problem is bigger than a block, see reporting a post on X.

Frequently asked questions
Does X notify you when someone blocks you?
No. X's Help Center says blocked accounts don't receive a notification. They only find out if they visit the profile of the account that blocked them, where X shows that they've been blocked.
Can someone who blocked me still see my posts on X?
If your posts are public, yes. X says accounts you've blocked can still see public posts but can't like, reply or repost. The same applies to anyone who blocked you.
Is being muted the same as being blocked on X?
No. X says mute is invisible to the muted account, so you can't tell if you've been muted. A block shows on the person's profile when you visit it.
If they unblock me, will we follow each other again?
No. X says a block makes both accounts unfollow each other, and after an unblock you'd have to follow the account again.
Can I message someone on X who blocked me?
No. X says blocked accounts can't send Direct Messages to the account that blocked them, unless that account unblocks them.
