AI Timeline Generators (2026): 10 Tools Compared

An AI timeline generator turns a list of dates, a description or a document into a visual timeline you can edit and share. Some are built for project schedules and Gantt charts, some for history and storytelling, and some for infographics and slides. Ten tools follow in no particular order, grouped by what they do best.

Timelines turn up everywhere: a launch plan for a client, a history project for school, a backstory for a novel or a company milestone slide. Building one by hand is fiddly, which is why AI tools that take your notes and lay them out in order are so tempting.

The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you'd rather stay in a spreadsheet, my project timeline spreadsheet template does the job without any new software.

AI timeline generators at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version, a free account or free use. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the tool's own site before you sign up.

Ten tools that build timelines for you

Instagantt

Best for: Project managers who think in tasks and dependencies, with AI-powered Gantt charts to plan and schedule work across a team.

Markwhen

Best for: Developers and note-takers who'd rather type events as plain text and see a timeline, Gantt chart or calendar appear.

MyMap

Best for: Students and family historians who want a timeline from a prompt, a PDF or images, from historical events to a life story.

Napkin AI

Best for: Bloggers and presenters who write first, then want that text turned into a diagram or visual they can drop into slides.

Piktochart

Best for: Marketers who need an editable timeline infographic from a milestone list, a project plan or a sequence of historical events.

Preceden

Best for: Researchers, teachers and legal teams who want a visual timeline on any topic generated with AI, then edited by hand.

StoryLegend

Best for: Novelists and worldbuilders who need to arrange the events of an invented world in order, alongside a family tree builder.

TeamGantt

Best for: Teams who'd like to describe a project in words and get a Gantt chart they can edit, share and keep.

Timepath

Best for: Journalists and editors who want to add context and timelines to an article on deadline, then share them as stories.

Visme

Best for: Teams already making presentations and reports who want a timeline maker in the same tool, with AI design helpers on hand.

Which timeline tool for which job

  • You're planning a project with a team: Instagantt.
  • You need a milestone infographic for a deck: Piktochart.
  • You're mapping out a novel or a fantasy world: StoryLegend.
  • You'd like to describe a project in words: TeamGantt.
  • You prefer typing plain text to dragging boxes: Markwhen.

Three kinds of timeline, three kinds of tool

Project timelines are about tasks, owners and dependencies, so Gantt-style tools fit best. Historical or story timelines are about events in order, often with images and notes, so a visual timeline maker is better. Presentation timelines are about one clear message on one slide, so an infographic or diagram tool wins.

Most disappointment comes from choosing the wrong kind. A beautiful history timeline tool won't track who's late on a task, and a Gantt chart makes a terrible slide for a client pitch.

Work with me

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Build your timeline in phases, not just dates

The GOV.UK Service Manual, which guides how UK government teams build digital services, says alphas tend to last between 6 and 8 weeks and suggests booking the alpha assessment within a fortnight of starting. That's a useful model for any project: break the work into phases with known lengths and put review points near the start, not only at the end.

When you ask an AI tool for a timeline, give it the phases, rough lengths and checkpoints you know about. You'll get something your team can run, rather than a neat line of dates nobody believes.

If your plan needs screens, wireframe generators are listed here.

Questions to ask before you choose

  1. Can you edit every date and label after the AI has drafted it?
  2. Can it import a document, a spreadsheet or a list of milestones?
  3. Does it export to the format you need, such as slides, PDF or an image?
  4. Can your team or client view and comment without an account?
  5. Will it handle a long project, or only a handful of events?

Keep the timeline honest

A timeline is a promise, so don't let a tool squash real work into an optimistic line. Check every date the AI suggests against what your team says is realistic, add a little slack before big milestones, and update it when things change rather than leaving an old version in someone's inbox.

Do you make timeline, Gantt chart or roadmap tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing an AI timeline generator

Start with the job, not the tool. If people will work from it, choose a Gantt-style tool. If people will look at it, choose a visual or infographic tool. Then feed it real phases and checkpoints, and edit the draft until every date is one you'd defend.

If the timeline is heading into a presentation, my guide on making a timeline in Google Slides shows how to finish it off.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI timeline generator?

It's a tool that turns dates, notes or a document into a visual timeline or Gantt chart you can edit and share, instead of drawing it by hand.

Can AI make a project timeline?

Yes. Some tools let you describe a project in words and get a Gantt chart back, which you can then adjust with your team.

Is there a free AI timeline maker?

Yes. Several tools here name a free plan, a free account or free use on their own page, so check the free plan column before you choose.

What's the difference between a timeline and a Gantt chart?

A timeline shows events in order. A Gantt chart shows tasks over time with their lengths, owners and dependencies, which suits project planning.

How long should project phases be?

It depends on the work, but the GOV.UK Service Manual says alphas tend to last between 6 and 8 weeks, a handy reference for planning phases with early reviews.
