A cursive app teaches joined handwriting by having you watch each letter being formed, trace it with a finger or stylus and then write it on your own, usually with animated stroke order. Some are built for children at school, some for adults improving their handwriting or calligraphy. Ten options follow, in no particular order.
Joined handwriting has a habit of coming back into fashion. Schools still teach it, parents want to help at home, and plenty of adults wish their handwriting didn't look like a hurried shopping list. A tablet and a stylus turn out to be a very good way to practise.
The apps below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the provider's own website or app store listing, read this week. If you only want cursive-style text for a social profile, my guide to stylish fonts for your Instagram name and bio covers that instead.
Cursive apps at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each provider's own website or app store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names the app, an account, a plan or a version of it as free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start or a store download button, so check the provider's own page before you sign up.

What schools in England expect
The Department for Education's English programmes of study say pupils should be taught the diagonal and horizontal strokes needed to join letters, and that joined handwriting should become the norm, fast enough for pupils to keep pace with what they want to say.
That last part is the useful test for any app. Neat letters matter, but so does speed. Once a child forms each letter correctly, short practice writing whole words and sentences does more than tracing single letters again and again.

Tracing apps, programmes and calligraphy tools
Tracing apps show each letter's stroke order with animation and let children follow it with a finger or stylus. They're ideal for the early stages and for children who've picked up awkward habits.
Programmes for schools give teachers a full sequence of lessons and workbooks across several year groups, so you won't need to plan it all yourself. Calligraphy apps are for adults who'd like beautiful lettering, and they'll often include many script styles and printable practice sheets.

A short practice routine
- Watch the letter being formed in the app.
- Trace it three or four times with a stylus.
- Write it on paper without looking at the screen.
- Join it to the letters around it in a short word.
- Write one sentence at your normal speed and check it.
Joined-up writing goes well with word practice, so see a roundup of apps for weekly spelling tests.
Common cursive habits to fix early
- Starting letters in the wrong place. Animated stroke order fixes this quickly.
- Gripping the pen too tightly. It slows writing and tires the hand.
- Joining every letter. Some letter pairs are best left unjoined.
- Practising only single letters. Words and sentences build real speed.

My plain advice on cursive apps
Use an app to get letter formation right, then move to paper as quickly as you can. A tablet is brilliant for showing how each letter is made, but the habit that sticks is writing whole sentences at normal speed, a few minutes every day.
For something to write about, my writing prompts for middle schoolers give older children plenty of short practice topics.
