Closet design software lets you draw a closet or wardrobe to size, then add shelves, rails, drawers and doors and see the result in 2D or 3D. Some tools are free planners for homeowners, others are business software for closet companies, joiners and cabinet makers. Ten options follow, in no particular order.
A closet looks simple until you try to fit everything into it. Rails at the wrong height, shelves too deep and drawers that clash with the door are the kind of mistakes you only notice once it's built.
Designing it first, to the centimetre, avoids most of that. The tools below cover free online planners from storage brands, apps for a tablet, and professional software that carries a design through to manufacturing. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you're short of space, my guide to organising a small closet with lots of clothes has practical ideas.
Closet design tools side by side
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names the tool, an account or a plan or version of it as free, or says it's open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial or a small free allowance. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the tool's own page before you sign up.

Anchor tall storage as part of the design
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's Anchor It! campaign says anchoring all furniture with drawers, doors and shelves to the wall prevents tip-over injuries and deaths. The campaign was launched in response to rising injuries from furniture and TV tip-overs.
Tall closet towers, freestanding wardrobes and drawer units belong in that group. When you design a closet, plan where each unit fixes to the wall and what that wall is made of, so anchoring is part of the build rather than something left for later.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Measure for a closet that fits
- Measure width, height and depth at several points.
- Note skirting boards, sockets and light switches.
- Check how the door opens and how much space it needs.
- Count long and short hanging items separately.
- Decide where shoes, bags and folded clothes will go.
Brand planners, design apps and professional software
Brand planners from storage companies are free or easy to start, and they design with that brand's own parts. They're ideal if you already like a system and want to see how it fits your space.
Design apps work on a tablet or computer and suit homeowners and designers who want more freedom. Professional software is for closet businesses, joiners and cabinet makers, producing quotes, parts lists and sometimes cutting files. Pick the type that matches who will build it.
Our roundup of house design software is a useful follow-up.
Closet design mistakes to avoid
- Too little long hanging space. Coats and dresses need height.
- Shelves that are too deep. Things get lost at the back.
- Drawers behind a door. Check they open fully.
- No anchoring plan. Tall units must fix to the wall.
Looking for something different? The three-dimensional home design software comparison rounds up another set of tools.
Signs your closet design will work
- Everything you own has a home.
- Doors and drawers open without clashing.
- Daily items sit at eye height.
- Every tall unit has an anchor point.
Do you make closet or wardrobe design software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on closet design software
If you're a homeowner, start with a free planner from a storage brand and design around the clothes you own, not the clothes you wish you had. If you run a closet or joinery business, pick software that turns a design into a proposal and a parts list, so the sales conversation and the build stay in sync.
Either way, measure twice and plan the anchoring before you order anything. If the garage is your next storage project, my guide to organising a garage simply picks up from here.
