What Does Gyat Mean? The Streamer Slang Explained for Parents, Teachers and the Curious

Gyat, also spelled gyatt, is an exclamation like 'wow' or 'goddamn'. Wiktionary says it began as an African-American Vernacular English pronunciation of 'God', most likely from 'Goddamn!', and was popularised by streamers shouting it on seeing someone with a curvy body. So it can be a general 'wow', but it often refers to someone's backside.

If you've heard a child or teenager shout 'gyat' and wondered what on earth it means, you're not alone. It's one of the most searched pieces of streamer slang, and its meaning isn't obvious from the word. Here's where it came from, what it's used for now, why it's not always harmless, and how to talk about it if you're a parent or teacher.

Gyat started as a way of saying 'God'

Wiktionary's entry for gyatt gives the long history. It describes gyatt as a pronunciation spelling of God in phrases like 'God damn' and 'oh my God', representing African-American Vernacular English. Its earliest examples are tweets: one from January 2009 says 'gyat dayum' about a music album, others from 2011 and 2012 use 'oh gyat', 'gyatt damn' and 'thank gyat'.

In that original use, gyat had nothing to do with bodies. It was just an exclamation, the way someone might say 'oh my God' when they're hungry, shocked or impressed. Wiktionary lists the interjection meaning as 'Goddamn! Wow!'

How a streamer turned gyat into a meme

The modern meaning comes from live streaming. Wiktionary says the word was popularised by YouTuber and Twitch streamer YourRAGE, who in June 2021 started a gag in which he would scream 'GYATT' on seeing an attractive woman's buttocks. It quotes him explaining in a 2023 video that he always said 'gyatt' instead of 'god damn', and that his chat started typing it to make fun of him.

Wiktionary says other YouTubers, including Kai Cenat, picked up the gag, and the term spread further around early 2023. From there it went to TikTok, school playgrounds and gaming chats, often used by kids who've heard it in clips without knowing where it started.

What gyat means now

Today gyat has two overlapping uses:

  • A general exclamation of surprise or excitement, like 'wow' or 'oh my God'.
  • A reaction to someone's curvy body, especially their backside. Wiktionary records gyat as a noun too, with the plural gyats, used for this sense.

The second meaning is the one most people mean when they shout it, and it's the one that causes trouble. Saying it about a real person, especially to their face or in comments on their photos, is a comment on their body. It can make people uncomfortable, and in a school or workplace it can cross the line into harassment.

How to say gyat

Wiktionary gives a few pronunciations. The common ones sound like 'gyat' rhyming with 'cat', or 'gyaht' rhyming with 'hot'. It also lists a jokey 'guy-at', reading the spelling literally, which it labels humorous and nonstandard. You'll hear all three online.

Gyat vs other streamer slang

WordRough meaningNotes
GyatWow, often about someone's bodyFrom a 2021 streamer gag
RizzCharm, flirting skillOften in the same clips
SkibidiNonsense word from a viral seriesMostly harmless
SigmaA self-styled lone wolf typeOften ironic

Gyat tends to travel with the rest of this vocabulary. If you're catching up, my guides to rizz and skibidi explain two others you'll hear in the same breath.

If you're a parent or teacher

Many younger kids repeat gyat because it sounds funny and they've heard it in videos. They may not know what it refers to. A calm conversation usually works better than a ban:

  1. Ask what they think it means. You'll often find they don't know.
  2. Explain that it's commonly used about someone's body, and why that can upset people.
  3. Agree where it's not OK: about classmates, teachers, or on anyone's photos.
  4. Keep an eye on where they're picking it up, especially streams and short videos.

Why gyat spread so fast

Streamer slang moves quickly because clips travel further than the streams themselves. A few seconds of a streamer shouting a word gets cut, reposted and remixed on TikTok and YouTube Shorts, and a word that started as one person's habit ends up in school corridors within months. Wiktionary's own timeline, from a 2021 gag to wider popularity in early 2023, shows how short that journey was.

It also helps that gyat is fun to shout. It's one syllable, it sounds silly, and it has a slightly rude meaning that makes it feel daring to younger kids. That combination is exactly what makes playground slang stick, and exactly why it's worth explaining rather than just banning.

Like most meme words, it'll probably fade as new ones arrive. Until then, knowing what it means puts you a step ahead of the joke, and makes it much easier to have a calm word when it's aimed at the wrong person.

Should a brand ever use gyat?

No. Even used as a jokey 'wow', it carries the body meaning, and most audiences will read it that way. It can come across as crude, and it ties your brand to a meme many parents dislike. If you want an excited reaction on a playful account, there are plenty of safer options. Leave gyat to the streamers.

Parents keep asking about newer phrases too, and one more is covered in what the viral phrase six seven means.

Made-up examples of gyat in use

  • 'Gyat, that pizza is huge.' The general 'wow' sense.
  • 'He just shouted gyat at the screen.' A gamer reacting to a clip.
  • 'Gyatt damn, I'm hungry.' The older exclamation, closer to the 2011 tweets.
  • 'Stop saying gyat in class.' A teacher who knows what it means.

Another term that comes up in teen chat, with a very different meaning, is explained in the TF meaning page.
