What Does HBU Mean? How About You, Keeping a Chat Going and HBU vs WBU

HBU means 'how about you?'. Wiktionary lists hbu as internet slang for 'how 'bout you?', with the example 'what's up? I'm about to go to bed, hbu?'. You add it after answering a question so the other person gets a turn. It's a small, friendly way of saying 'your go'.

HBU is the conversational equivalent of passing the ball back. Someone asks how you are, you answer, and then you ask them. Without it, chats can stall after one reply. Here's how it works, how it compares with its close cousins, and a strange detour if you look it up in the dictionary.

How 'bout you, in three letters

Wiktionary's entry is short: hbu is an initialism of 'how 'bout you?', marked as internet slang. The example it gives shows the typical pattern. Person A asks what's up. Person B answers, 'I'm about to go to bed', then adds 'hbu?' so Person A can share too.

That second half is the point. HBU tells the other person you're interested in their answer, not just giving yours. It's a tiny sign of good manners in text form.

HBU, WBU and NMU side by side

AbbreviationStands forBest fit
HBUHow about you?Turning back a 'how are you' or 'what are you up to'
WBUWhat about you?Turning back almost any question
NMUNot much, you?Answering 'what's up' and asking back in one go
U?And you?The shortest version of all

HBU and WBU are used almost interchangeably. HBU feels slightly more natural after a feelings question ('how are you?'), while WBU fits better after a choices question ('what are you having?'). Nobody will mind if you swap them.

Wiktionary points to nmu as a related term. It's 'not much, you?', which bundles an answer and an hbu together for the classic 'what's up?' exchange.

Why HBU keeps a conversation alive

Text conversations die when one person stops asking questions. If someone writes 'good, just got back from the gym' and nothing else, the other person has to think of a new topic. Add 'hbu?' and the next move is obvious. That's why HBU is so common at the start of chats, especially with someone you're getting to know.

It also works as a polite exit ramp from talking about yourself. If you've shared a lot, an hbu hands the spotlight over without making a fuss.

The Okinawan snake in the dictionary

Here's an odd one. Type hbu into Dictionary.com and it doesn't show the slang. It offers 'habu' instead: a large venomous snake, a pit viper found on Okinawa and other Ryukyu Islands, named from the local word used there. Wiktionary adds a related quirk: HBU is also the ISO 639-3 code for the Habu language. So if a search for hbu gives you snakes or language codes, you're in the wrong corner of the internet.

These are invented messages, not real chats, showing hbu in use:

  • 'Pretty good, just tired, hbu?' The everyday version.
  • 'Staying in tonight, hbu?' Turning plans back.
  • 'I'm team pineapple on pizza, hbu?' Asking for an opinion.
  • 'Back at work tomorrow, sadly. Hbu?' Sharing then asking.

Answering an HBU

  • Give a real answer: 'Not bad, finally finished that project.' It moves the chat forward.
  • Add a question of your own, so the ball keeps going back and forth.
  • If you're winding down, answer and sign off: 'Same, heading to bed, gn!'

A one-word reply to an hbu, like 'same', can read as if you'd rather not chat. That's fine if it's late, but if you're keen, give a little more.

When an HBU goes unanswered

Sending 'hbu?' and getting nothing back can feel awkward, but it's rarely personal. People read messages on the move, mean to answer later and forget. If the chat matters to you, a light follow-up a while later, like 'so, how was your day?', usually restarts it without pressure.

The opposite problem is answering an hbu too briefly. A reply of 'good' gives nothing to work with. If you want the conversation to continue, add one detail: what you did, what you're planning or something that made you laugh. That gives the other person an easy next message.

And if you're the one who always asks hbu and never gets asked back, that's useful information too. Good chats go both ways, and three letters are a quick way to see whether they do.

HBU also works beyond small talk. You can use it after sharing an opinion, such as 'I preferred the first film, hbu?', or after giving news, such as 'I've booked the trip, hbu?'. In each case it invites the other person to share their side. That makes it one of the most useful three-letter tools in texting, because it turns a statement into a conversation with almost no effort, and it signals you care about the answer.

Spelling varies a little. You'll see 'hbu', 'HBU', 'hby' as a typo and 'how bout u' written out. They all mean the same. A question mark is optional, since the phrase is already a question, though adding one can make it feel more curious and less automatic.

Greetings come in abbreviations too, and the GM guide covers one.

HBU in customer chats

In a business setting, a quick 'how about you?' in full can make a support chat feel warmer, especially if the customer opened with small talk. I'd avoid the abbreviation itself with customers, because not everyone knows it and it can read as too casual. With your own team or in a friendly community group, hbu is perfectly at home and shows you're interested in the people behind the messages.

The short answer many people send back is explained in the NM page.

What does HBU mean in a text?

It means 'how about you?', a way to turn a question back to the other person.

Is HBU the same as WBU?

Nearly. WBU means 'what about you?' and the two are used interchangeably.
