How to Become a Driving Instructor in the UK: ADI Tests and Fees

To become a driving instructor in Great Britain, you check you're eligible, get a new DBS check, apply to start the approved driving instructor (ADI) process and then pass 3 tests: a theory test, a driving ability test and an instructional ability test. Once you've passed, you register as an ADI within 12 months and can start charging for lessons.

You'll need a full UK or EU driving licence held for at least 3 years. The deadline that catches people out comes after the first test.

The steps and fees here come from GOV.UK's step-by-step guide to becoming a car driving instructor and the National Careers Service profile, both read on 26 October 2026. Northern Ireland has a different process.

The ADI fees at a glance

StepGOV.UK fee, as of October 2026
ADI part 1, theory test£81
ADI part 2, driving ability test£111
Trainee instructor licence (optional)£140
ADI part 3, instructional ability test£111
First ADI certificate (registration)£300

Those are the fees GOV.UK lists as of October 2026. Training with a registered trainer and your DBS check are separate.

The route in, step by step

  1. Check you're eligible. The National Careers Service says you need a full UK or EU driving licence held for at least 3 years, and you must be able to read a licence plate at 90 feet, or 27.5m, with glasses or contact lenses if you wear them.
  2. Get a new Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, even if you already have one, and agree to the responsibilities in the ADI register guide.
  3. Apply to start the ADI qualifying process.
  4. Find a registered trainer to help you prepare for the 3 tests.
  5. Pass ADI part 1, the theory test, which has multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception video test taken together.
  6. Pass ADI part 2, a test of your own driving.
  7. Optionally apply for a 6-month trainee licence to get teaching experience.
  8. Pass ADI part 3, a test of how well you teach pupils.
  9. Register for your first ADI certificate within 12 months of passing.

The deadline most people miss: 2 years from the theory test

Once you've passed the theory test, you must pass the other parts within 2 years or you'll have to start the whole process again. That's the clock to plan around.

So don't book part 1 until you're ready to keep going. Line up your trainer and your practice time for parts 2 and 3 before you sit the theory test, because a slow middle stage can cost you the lot.

What each test checks

TestWhat it checks
ADI part 1Theory: multiple-choice questions plus hazard perception. You must pass both parts.
ADI part 2Your own driving in different road and traffic conditions, and your knowledge of The Highway Code.
ADI part 3Your ability to teach pupils, against the national standard for driver and rider training.

GOV.UK's advice for part 2 is blunt: only take the test when you can do everything without instruction. If you fail part 1, you can rebook, but the date must be at least 3 working days after your last test.

After you qualify

With your certificate, you can join a driving school or set up your own business. You'll have at least one standards check every 4 years, and you renew your registration and get a new DBS check every 4 years too.

You normally charge by the hour, so the National Careers Service says your income depends on how many hours you work and the demand for lessons in your area. With experience, you could move into advanced driver training, teaching disabled drivers, or training drivers of large goods, passenger or emergency vehicles. Highly experienced instructors can become driving examiners.

Is it the right job for you?

GOV.UK suggests checking whether the role suits you on the Safe Driving for Life website before you apply, and it's worth doing, because the tests take time and fees. The National Careers Service lists the skills that matter most:

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • The ability to teach people how to do something.
  • Patience and the ability to stay calm in stressful situations.
  • Monitoring your own and your learner's performance.
  • Being thorough and paying attention to detail.
  • Using a computer and the main software packages competently.

The day-to-day work is planning lessons and routes, teaching road safety, driving law and The Highway Code, and showing learners how to steer, turn, reverse and park safely. If staying calm while someone else is at the wheel sounds hard, take that seriously before you pay for part 1.

My verdict

Becoming a driving instructor is a clear, regulated route: a DBS check, 3 tests and registration, with GOV.UK fees from £81 for the theory test to £300 for your first ADI certificate, as of October 2026. The real risk isn't any single test; it's the 2-year window after the theory test. Plan all 3 tests as one project, use a registered trainer, and think about the hours you can teach, because that's what sets your income once you're qualified.
