Pharmacy Technician: What the Job Involves and How to Become One

A pharmacy technician prepares and supplies medicines under a pharmacist's supervision, handling prescriptions, stock and customer questions. In the US most start with a high school diploma plus on-the-job training or a short certificate course; in the UK you train for about 2 years and must register with the General Pharmaceutical Council before you can practise.

It's a popular route into healthcare because you can earn while you train and you don't need a degree. The rules around it differ a lot between countries, though, and that's what trips people up when they read advice written for somewhere else.

This guide covers the job, the training routes and the official pay figures in the US and the UK. It's a careers explainer, not health advice.

What pharmacy technicians do

The BLS says pharmacy technicians help pharmacists dispense prescription medication and spend much of their time with customers. Pharmacists must review prescriptions before they're dispensed. In most US states technicians can compound or mix some medications and call physicians for refill authorisations, and in many states trained technicians can also give vaccines under pharmacist supervision. Hospital technicians may prepare intravenous medications and make rounds.

In the UK, the National Careers Service describes the role as preparing and supplying medicines for prescriptions under the supervision of a pharmacist, in community pharmacies, hospitals and other settings.

How to become a pharmacy technician in the US

  1. Finish high school or an equivalent.
  2. Choose between on-the-job training and a postsecondary pharmacy technology program. The BLS says programs at vocational schools or community colleges often award a certificate after a year or less, and some lead to an associate's degree.
  3. Check your state's rules. The BLS says most states regulate pharmacy technicians, which may require passing an exam or completing formal training.
  4. Apply to retail, hospital or mail-order pharmacies, many of which train new hires.

How to become a pharmacy technician in the UK

  1. Get the entry qualifications, usually 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 including English and maths.
  2. Apply for a Pharmacy Technician Level 3 apprenticeship or a trainee pharmacy technician role. The National Careers Service says the NHS and the armed forces also train technicians through apprenticeships.
  3. Complete about 2 years of training and the Level 3 qualification while you work.
  4. Register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). You can't practise as a pharmacy technician without it.
  5. Keep your registration up to date. The GPhC says technicians must record each year what they've done to keep their knowledge and skills current.

The UK apprenticeship route is often funded by the employer, which my guide to the apprenticeship levy explains.

The insight people miss: registration changes the job

In the UK, pharmacy technician is a registered healthcare profession, with nine standards set by the GPhC and annual revalidation. In the US, rules are set state by state. That's why US articles about getting started fast don't translate to the UK, and why a UK technician can't simply move into a US role, or the reverse, without meeting the local rules.

A typical day

Most of a technician's day is spent at the counter or the dispensing bench. That means receiving prescriptions, checking patient details, picking and labelling medicines, managing stock and deliveries, and answering questions that don't need a pharmacist. Hospital roles add ward visits and preparing specialist medicines. In both countries the pharmacist stays responsible for the final check, so accuracy and knowing when to hand a question over are the core skills.

Shifts can include evenings and weekends, especially in community pharmacies that open long hours. If you want predictable hours, hospital outpatient or mail-order pharmacy roles are worth asking about.

Most technicians start in community pharmacy, and many move into hospital or specialist roles once they're qualified.

Job outlook

The BLS projects US pharmacy technician jobs to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all occupations, with about 44,700 openings a year on average. There were 471,200 jobs in 2025.

Remote work is limited, because most of the job involves handling medicines in person. If you're curious about the exceptions, my guide on finding remote pharmacy technician jobs explains which listings are real.

My verdict

If you want a practical healthcare job you can train for while earning, pharmacy technician is a solid choice, especially in the UK, where the apprenticeship route and NHS pay bands give you a clear path. In the US, check your state's requirements before paying for any course, because a certificate that doesn't meet them won't help. Pay won't match a pharmacist's, but you can start years sooner and without student debt. For course specifics, speak to the National Careers Service in the UK or your state board of pharmacy in the US.
