A storybook maker helps you write, illustrate and share a children's story, either with AI that draws the pictures or with templates you fill in yourself. Some are AI story generators, some are classroom book tools and some print personalised gift books. Ten options follow in no particular order.
Bedtime stories where your child is the hero. A class book every pupil helped write. A grandparent's memories turned into a picture book. Storybook makers have made all three far easier than they used to be.
The ten tools below cover AI storybook generators, classroom book creators and personalised print services. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you'd like to write the story first, my guide to writing a children's story with AI for free walks through it.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website or store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page says the tool, or a plan, account or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Check the privacy terms before a child uploads anything
The Federal Trade Commission explains that the Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule applies to operators of commercial websites and online services, including apps, that are directed to children under 13 and collect, use or disclose personal information from them.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Personalised storybooks run on personal details: a child's name, age, photo and sometimes their school. Before you let a child type those in, or upload their photo yourself, read how the app stores and uses them. A tool built for children should be open about it, and if you can't find the answer, make the book with a nickname and no photo.
AI generator, book creator or gift service?
An AI generator writes and illustrates a story from a prompt. It's fast and fun, and you'll still want to read every page before a child does.
A book creator is a blank book with tools for text, pictures and audio, so children do the writing themselves, which is the point in a classroom.
A gift service designs and prints a personalised book for you. It's the least work, and the story follows the service's template.
Six things a good children's story needs
- One main character the child cares about.
- A simple problem in the first pages.
- Repetition young readers can join in with.
- A picture on every spread.
- A satisfying, calm ending for bedtime.
- Words a child can read or follow aloud.
Signs an AI story needs editing
- The character's face changes. Regenerate that page.
- The plot wanders. Cut the extra scenes.
- Words are too hard. Simplify for the age.
- The ending is scary. Soften it for bedtime.
Do you make storybook tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on making a storybook
Read the story aloud before you print or share it. Rhythm matters more than vocabulary in a children's book, and you'll hear the clunky lines straight away. If AI wrote it, this is also when you'll catch the odd sentence that doesn't make sense.
If your children love writing their own stories, my kindergarten writing prompts give them a place to start.
