Best AI Legal Tools for Small Business (2026): 10 Compared

An AI legal assistant helps a small business draft, review or manage contracts and legal paperwork, or answers everyday legal questions in plain English. Some are contract tools, some are online legal services with AI built in and one is a regulated AI law firm. Ten options follow in no particular order.

Most small businesses don't have a lawyer on call. They have a supplier contract to check, a late invoice to chase or a new hire who needs an agreement, and they want help today rather than next week.

The ten tools below cover sole traders, growing companies and larger firms. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're writing agreements for clients, my guide to building a contract template for freelance clients covers what every one should include.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website or store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free or open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Ask whether a regulated firm stands behind the advice

The Solicitors Regulation Authority says Garfield.Law is the first purely AI-based firm it has authorised to provide regulated legal services in England and Wales. The SRA adds that named regulated solicitors stay accountable for all of the system's outputs, and that regulated firms must hold a minimum level of insurance to protect clients.

That's the question most owners never ask. The majority of AI legal tools are software, not law firms, so if a contract they help you draft goes wrong, the protections you'd get from a solicitor don't automatically apply. Software is fine for first drafts, checklists and plain-English explanations. For a dispute, a big contract or anything you'd lose sleep over, use a service where a regulated lawyer is accountable for the work.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Contract software helps you create, review and store agreements. It speeds up routine work, and you or your own lawyer still make the decisions.

An online legal service combines documents and filings with access to human lawyers, so you can start with AI help and escalate when you need to.

A regulated AI law firm delivers legal services itself, with solicitors accountable for what the system produces. It's a new model and worth watching.

  1. Is a regulated law firm or lawyer accountable for the output?
  2. Which country's law does it cover?
  3. Where is your contract data stored, and who can see it?
  4. Does it train its models on your documents?
  5. Can you move to a human lawyer from inside the tool?
  6. What happens if it gets something wrong?

Signs you need a human lawyer, not a tool

  • Someone's threatening to sue. Get advice now.
  • The contract is worth a lot. Have it checked.
  • You don't understand a clause. Ask before signing.
  • Staff are involved. Employment law changes often.

Do you make AI legal tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

Use AI to get to a better first draft and a sharper list of questions, then decide what needs a human. A tool that flags the unusual clause in a supplier agreement has already saved you time, even if you still pay a solicitor to look at that one clause. That's a far better use of AI than signing whatever it writes.

If late payment is your main legal headache, my guide to using AI to chase unpaid invoices covers the steps before any claim.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI legal assistant?

It's a tool that helps draft, review or explain contracts and legal documents, or answers everyday legal questions in plain English.

Can AI replace a lawyer for a small business?

Not for everything. Most AI legal tools are software, not regulated law firms, so use a regulated lawyer for disputes and high-stakes contracts.

Is there a regulated AI law firm in the UK?

Yes. The Solicitors Regulation Authority has authorised an AI-based firm to provide regulated legal services in England and Wales.

Can AI review a contract?

Yes. Several tools review and redline contracts, often against your own company policies.

Is my contract data safe in an AI tool?

Ask before you upload. Check where data is stored, who can see it and whether it's used to train models.

Do AI legal tools cover UK and US law?

It depends on the tool. Some focus on one country, so check which law it covers before you rely on it.
