How to Become an FBI Agent: Requirements and Training

To become an FBI agent, you'll need to be a US citizen with a bachelor's degree and qualifying work experience, meet the age rules, pass the Phase I test, the physical fitness test and a background investigation with a polygraph, and earn a Top Secret clearance. Then you'll complete 18 weeks of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico.

FBI special agents investigate federal crimes, and the hiring process is one of the most thorough in US law enforcement. Here's each requirement, the change to the rules in 2026 and how long it all takes.

Requirements come from the FBI's own careers site, fbijobs.gov, and job context from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) police and detectives profile. All were read on 26 October 2026.

What FBI agents do

BLS says FBI agents, sometimes called special agents, investigate and pursue cases that break federal law. That includes crimes against public agencies, such as Medicare fraud, and crimes that cross state lines. The FBI's own site adds work on drug trafficking, cyber threats and terrorism, often alongside other law enforcement partners.

Special agent requirements

On top of the general FBI eligibility rules, the FBI says special agents must:

  • Meet the age requirements at the time of appointment
  • Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Have qualifying professional work experience
  • Be able to get and keep the required security clearance
  • Be available for assignment wherever the FBI needs them

The general rules include being a US citizen, having no felony convictions, passing a drug test and background investigation, being current on taxes, student loans and child support, and registering with the Selective Service if required. Certain preference-eligible veterans may qualify for an age waiver.

The 2026 change most guides miss

From 6 July 2026, the FBI added a new GL-9 entry level for special agent applicants. You can now qualify with a bachelor's degree and one year of sworn law enforcement experience, or with an advanced degree such as a master's, a law degree or a PhD.

Before that, applicants needed two years of full-time work experience with a bachelor's degree, or one year with an advanced degree. If you're a police officer with a year on the job, or you've just finished a master's, the door may be open to you sooner than older guides suggest.

How to become an FBI agent, step by step

  1. Apply online. You submit a full application package, and the FBI checks it against the minimum qualifications.
  2. Take the Phase I test. It's a computer-based assessment of abilities important to agent work.
  3. Pass the physical fitness test. The PFT has four events done in sequence. You get three chances to pass after the Meet and Greet, and you must hit the minimum on every event.
  4. Complete interviews and the medical review. The medical review includes vision and hearing standards.
  5. Pass the background investigation. This includes a polygraph and leads to a Top Secret clearance and a final job offer.
  6. Graduate from Quantico. The Basic Field Training Course is 18 weeks and 850 hours of instruction in defensive tactics, investigations and firearms.

The FBI says the whole process takes about a year and may take longer. You'll learn your first field office before you start training, and you may be able to return to your processing field office after graduating.

Pay and benefits

The FBI doesn't list a single salary on its special agent page, but it highlights a federal pension, student loan repayment, locality and availability pay, 12 weeks of paid parental leave and tuition support. Agents can retire after 25 years of service at any age, or after 20 years at age 50, earlier than most federal employees.

Where federal agents train

BLS notes that federal law enforcement agents usually train at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, or at a Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. For FBI special agents, the Basic Field Training Course at Quantico covers defensive tactics, investigative techniques and firearms skills, and it's an immersive 18 weeks, so plan your personal life around being away from home for that stretch.

How to prepare while you build experience

Use the FBI FitTest app to train for the PFT, build fitness gradually and practice every event before test day. Keep your finances, taxes and record clean, because the background check covers all of it. If you're coming from local policing, our guide on how to become a detective explains a path that now counts toward the new GL-9 entry level. Lawyers have a route too, since a law degree is one of the qualifying advanced degrees, and our guide on becoming a lawyer covers that path.

My verdict

Becoming an FBI agent takes a degree, the right experience, top fitness and a spotless background, and the process alone runs about a year. The 2026 change makes it easier for sworn officers and people with advanced degrees to get in, so if that's you, look at the GL-9 route now. Start fitness training early, keep your record clean and talk to a recruiter at your local field office before you apply.
