A stage name generator suggests a performing name for a singer, DJ, producer, actor or comedian, built from your real name, a genre, a style or a short description. Some focus on K-pop idol names; others cover any artist. Check the name is free on streaming and social platforms before you commit. Ten options follow, in no particular order.
Plenty of performers have had to change their stage name after the first release because someone else got there first, and every early fan had to learn it twice.
The ten generators below cover DJ and producer names, singer and artist names, K-pop idol names and tools that build a stage name from your own name. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you already have a profile to update, my guide to changing your Spotify username covers the listener side.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the tool's own page before you sign up.

Copyright won't protect a stage name
A U.S. Copyright Office post on the Library of Congress blog explains that the name of a performing group is not a pseudonym, and that a pseudonym itself isn't protected by copyright, because copyright doesn't protect words and short phrases such as names, titles and slogans.
So copyright won't stop someone else using the same stage name. Before you print it on merch or a first release, search it on the big streaming services, social platforms and domain names. If it's already in use by an active artist in your genre, keep looking.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
How to choose a stage name that lasts
- Say it the way a host would introduce you on stage.
- Search it on streaming services, social apps and domain names.
- Check it's easy to spell after hearing it once.
- Make sure it still fits if your sound changes.
- Grab the matching handles before you announce it.
Producers who need melodies and drum patterns to go with the new name can look at the AI MIDI generators.
DJ names, singer names and acting names
DJs and producers often choose short, punchy names that look good on a flyer and in a festival line-up. Singers tend to keep part of their real name so fans feel they know them. Actors usually stay closest to a real name, and some unions expect each member's professional name to be different from everyone else's.
Whichever route you take, your handle matters as much as the name. My TikTok username generator helps when the exact handle is taken.
Stage name mistakes
- A name another artist already uses. Fans and algorithms will mix you up.
- Hard spellings. Nobody can search for what they can't spell.
- A name tied to one trend. It dates fast.
- Skipping the handle check. The name is only half the job.
Signs your stage name is right
- A host can say it without practising.
- It's free on the platforms you need.
- Fans can spell it after hearing it once.
- It suits the music you'll make in five years.
Do you make stage name generators? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on choosing a stage name
Use a generator for a long list, then cut hard: the name has to be easy to say, easy to spell and free on the platforms where fans will look for you.
Don't assume a name is safe because it isn't copyrighted; search before you print, record or announce anything.
Authors who publish under another name are covered in my pen name guide, which compares tools for novelists and self-published writers.
Frequently asked questions
What is a stage name generator?
A tool that suggests performing names for singers, DJs, actors and other performers from your name, genre or style.
Are stage name generators free?
Most tools on this list name a free tool on their own site, as the table shows.
Can I copyright my stage name?
No. The U.S. Copyright Office says names and short phrases aren't protected by copyright.
How do I check if a stage name is taken?
Search it on streaming services, social platforms and domain names before you use it.
Should a DJ name be different from a singer name?
DJ names are often shorter and punchier so they read well on flyers and line-ups.
Can I use my real name with a twist?
Yes. Many performers keep a first name and add a new surname or a single-word alias.
