A pen name generator suggests an author pseudonym from your real name, your genre, a language or a short description of your writing. Self-published authors use them to separate genres, keep privacy or find a name that fits the shelf. Check the name isn't already used by another author before you publish. Ten options follow, in no particular order.
Some of the best-selling authors on any shelf aren't using the name on their birth certificate, and plenty of readers never find out.
The ten generators below cover genre-specific pen names, names built from your own name, names in other languages and simple random pseudonyms. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you're writing for hire as well, my guide to freelance author jobs covers where to look.
Pen name generators at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the tool's own page before you sign up.

What the U.S. Copyright Office says about pen names
The U.S. Copyright Office's Circular 32 says nicknames and abbreviated forms of legal names aren't pseudonyms, and a pseudonym itself isn't protected by copyright. A pseudonymous work's copyright lasts 95 years from publication or 120 years from creation, whichever is shorter, unless the author's legal name is in the Office's records, in which case it's the author's life plus seventy years.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
A pen name hides you from readers, not from the law. If you register your work, including your real name in the application keeps the record clear and can change how long the copyright lasts. Initials on their own don't count as a pen name either.
How to choose a pen name
- Decide why you need one: privacy, a new genre or a cleaner brand.
- Look at the names on the shelf in your genre and match the feel.
- Search the name on book stores and social platforms.
- Check the matching domain and handles are free.
- Say it aloud as if a podcast host were introducing you.
Pen names by genre
Romance pen names tend to sound warm and memorable, thrillers lean short and sharp, and fantasy can carry initials or an unusual surname. Non-fiction authors usually keep their real name, because readers buy the expertise as much as the book.
Many authors write in more than one genre under different names, which keeps each readership clear about what they're getting. If you write mysteries, my mystery writing prompts are a quick way to test the new voice.
Pen name mistakes
- A name another author already uses. Readers will buy the wrong book.
- A name that doesn't fit the genre. It sets the wrong expectations.
- Forgetting the handles. Readers look for authors on social media.
- Assuming a pen name is a legal shield. It isn't.
Signs your pen name is right
- It looks at home on your genre's shelf.
- No other author uses it.
- The handles and domain are free.
- You're happy to answer to it at an event.
Do you make pen name generators? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on pen names
Use a generator to break the deadlock, then choose the name that looks right next to the bestsellers in your genre and is free on the platforms readers use.
Keep a clear private record of the name you write under, and include your real name if you register a copyright.
Performers face the same naming question in a different setting, and my stage name guide covers it.
