AI Book Title Generators (2026): 10 Tools Compared

An AI book title generator suggests titles from your genre, plot, themes or an excerpt, so you can see dozens of options in minutes and shortlist the strongest. Choose by how much you can steer the tone and length, and check your shortlist against books already in your category. Ten options follow, in no particular order.

A title has a big job for a few words. It has to hint at the genre, promise something and be easy to say out loud, and most authors get stuck on it far longer than they expect.

The ten generators below range from free one-click tools to writing apps that suggest titles alongside the manuscript. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're also checking how the book itself reads, my notes on signs your writing sounds like AI help with the manuscript.

AI book title generators at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Pick a generator by how you work

  • Titles from a pasted excerpt: Type.ai.
  • Titles shaped by Amazon keywords: KDP Tools.
  • A reason given for every suggestion: Squibler.
  • A shortlist you can lock and save: Reedsy.
  • Titles, then a cover to match: Canva.
  • A title for a self-published book: Bookbeaver.

The U.S. Copyright Office says copyright does not protect names, titles, slogans or short phrases, and that in some cases these things may be protected as trademarks instead.

That cuts both ways. Nobody can stop you using a title that's been used before, and nobody needs your permission to use yours. So search your category on the big bookshops before you commit, because sharing a title with a famous book confuses readers. If you're planning a series with a recurring name, that's when a trademark is worth asking about.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

How to choose a title that sells

  1. Generate thirty or more ideas, then shortlist five.
  2. Check each one hints at the genre without the cover.
  3. Say it out loud and imagine someone recommending it to a friend.
  4. Search it on the big bookshops and see what comes up.
  5. Test the last two on readers who match your audience.

Fiction and nonfiction titles work differently

Fiction titles sell a mood or a question: a place, a character, a hint of danger or romance. They can be short and mysterious, because the cover and blurb do the explaining.

Nonfiction titles sell a result. Most work best with a short, memorable main title and a subtitle that says exactly who the book helps and how. Ask the generator for both parts separately. Title mistakes to avoid

  • Too clever. A pun only you get won't sell the book.
  • Wrong genre signal. A cosy title on a thriller confuses readers.
  • Hard to spell. People can't search for what they can't type.
  • No search check. Look before you fall in love with it.

Signs a title isn't working

  • People ask you to repeat it. Simplify it.
  • It fits any book. Make it more specific.
  • It's already taken in your genre. Keep looking.
  • You have to explain it. Readers won't stay for the explanation.

My plain advice on AI book title tools

Use two or three generators with the same description and put every suggestion in one list. The best title often comes from combining half of one idea with half of another.

Then let readers decide, not the tool. Show your final two or three to people who read your genre and go with the one they remember an hour later.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI book title generator?

A tool that suggests book titles from your genre, plot, themes or an excerpt, so you can compare many ideas quickly.

Can I copyright a book title?

No. The U.S. Copyright Office says titles aren't protected by copyright, though some may be protected as trademarks.

Is there a free book title generator?

Most tools on this list name a free version or say they're free to use on their own site, as shown in the table.

Can two books have the same title?

Yes, but it can confuse readers, so search your category before you choose.

Should a nonfiction book have a subtitle?

Usually, yes. A subtitle tells readers exactly who the book is for and what it helps with.

How long should a book title be?

Short enough to say and remember easily. Many strong titles are one to five words.
