AI Recommendation Letter Generators: 10 Tools Compared

An AI recommendation letter generator drafts a letter of recommendation from your notes about the person, their goals and what you saw them do. You edit the draft, add specific examples and sign it yourself. Choose by who you write for, privacy terms and how much you can edit. Ten options follow, in no particular order.

Recommendation season arrives all at once. A teacher can have a stack of requests in the same fortnight, and a manager can be asked for a reference with two days' notice.

The ten generators below include free single-page tools, teaching platforms and design apps. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're on the other side of the process, my ChatGPT prompts for a cover letter that gets read may help too.

AI recommendation letter generators at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

The FERPA waiver question to check first

Under the FERPA regulations from the U.S. Department of Education, a student may waive the right to inspect and review confidential letters of recommendation. That waiver is valid only if it's in writing and signed, and a school can't require it as a condition of admission.

This matters before you write a word. If the student hasn't waived access, they may read the letter later, which affects how you phrase any concerns. Check the application form for the waiver box, then draft. The AI won't know which way it went unless you tell it.

What to give the AI before it writes

  1. Who the letter is for and what the person is applying to.
  2. How long you've known them and in what role.
  3. Two or three specific moments you saw yourself.
  4. The qualities the reader cares about most.
  5. Anything you can't say, so the draft doesn't say it for you.

Keep student data out of the prompt

Use first names or initials, not full records. Leave out grades you weren't asked to share, health details and anything a student told you privately. Many schools have a list of approved AI tools, so check it before you paste in notes.

Common mistakes with AI recommendation letters

  • Generic praise. Words like hardworking mean little without an example.
  • Wrong program or company. Check the name in every paragraph.
  • Overclaiming. Only say what you saw.
  • Same letter for everyone. Readers notice, especially at the same institution.

Signs a draft isn't ready to send

  • No named example. Add one you saw.
  • It praises traits you never mentioned. Remove them.
  • The tone isn't yours. Rewrite the opening.
  • It's longer than a page. Trim the general lines.

My plain advice on AI recommendation letters

Write your examples first, in plain notes, then let the tool turn them into a structured letter. The examples are what make a letter persuasive, and no generator can invent the moment you watched a student lead a project or a colleague calm an angry client.

Read the final version as if you were the admissions officer or hiring manager. If a sentence could describe anyone, cut it or replace it with something only you could know. For more on writing that doesn't sound machine-made, my notes on translating academic skills into business success show how to frame real achievements.

Frequently asked questions

Is it okay to use AI to write a letter of recommendation?

Policies vary, so check with the school or employer. Many recommenders use AI for a first draft and then edit and sign the final letter themselves.

What should a letter of recommendation include?

How you know the person, specific examples of their work or character, and why they suit the role or program.

Can students read their letters of recommendation?

In the US, students can waive their right to see confidential letters, but the waiver must be in writing and signed.

How long should a recommendation letter be?

Long enough for two or three specific examples. One page is common for most applications.

Should I put student grades into an AI tool?

Avoid it. Use initials, leave out records and check your school's list of approved tools first.

Can AI write a reference for an employee?

Yes. Several tools handle job references as well as academic letters, as long as you supply the real examples.
