The right OpenAI API alternative depends on which model handles your real tasks best, followed closely by each provider's data and retention terms and how much code you'd need to change. This page lists ten model APIs in no particular order, from closed flagship models to open-weight providers and fast inference services.
Plenty of businesses built their first AI feature on the OpenAI API and now want a second option. It might be for speed, for a model that's better at one task, for data that has to stay in a region or simply as a backup when one service has a bad day.
The ten APIs below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. Every description comes from the provider's own website, read this week. If you're still getting to grips with the original, my plain guide to the OpenAI API starts at the beginning.
OpenAI API alternatives at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each provider's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page I read names a free plan, free tier, free credits or open source software. Trial only means a free trial or starter credit. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the provider's page before you sign up.

Ten model APIs worth a look
Amazon Bedrock
Best for: Companies on AWS that want to build generative AI applications and agents with several model families at production scale.
Claude Platform
Best for: Developers who want Anthropic's Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet and Haiku, through the platform behind Claude Code.
Cohere
Best for: Enterprises that want private, customisable models for generation, embeddings, rerank, translation and document parsing.
DeepSeek Platform
Best for: Builders who want DeepSeek's latest models through an API that now supports web search and fetch.
Gemini Developer API
Best for: App developers who want Google's Gemini models, plus Imagen for images and Gemma open models, from one developer platform.
Groq
Best for: Coding tools and agents that want fast responses, built-in tools, prompt caching and batch processing from one API.
Kimi API Platform
Best for: Teams that want Kimi's flagship models with a 1M-token context window for coding, research and long documents.
Mistral AI
Best for: Organisations that want frontier and specialist open-weight models they can use as they are, or customise and keep.
Perplexity API
Best for: Products that want model answers grounded in live search, with an agent API and OpenAI compatibility.
SpaceXSI API
Best for: Developers who want Grok models for text, code, images, video, voice agents and real-time web search through one API.
Which API fits the job
- Several model families inside AWS: Amazon Bedrock.
- Private search, rerank and embeddings: Cohere.
- Models with built-in web search: DeepSeek Platform or Perplexity API.
- Very fast responses for coding tools: Groq.
- Very long documents: Kimi API Platform.
- Grok models for voice and images: SpaceXSI API.
Compare the data terms, not just the models
OpenAI's data controls page says data sent to the OpenAI API has not been used to train or improve OpenAI models since 1 Mar 2023 unless you opt in, and abuse monitoring logs are kept for up to 30 days by default.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
That's the baseline you're switching from. Every alternative has its own rules on training, retention, logging and where requests are processed, and they don't all match. Before you move customer data to a new API, read its data page with the same care you'd give a contract, and note whether you need to change your privacy notice.
Closed models, open-weight models or one gateway?
Closed model APIs give you a provider's own flagship models. They're often the strongest at reasoning, writing and coding, and you can't download them.
Open-weight models can be called through an API or hosted yourself. You gain control over the version and location, and you take on more choices.
A gateway or multi-provider service sends requests to several models through one API, which makes switching and backup easier.
Six steps for switching APIs safely
- List the tasks your app sends to the API today.
- Build a small test set of real prompts with good answers.
- Run the test set on two or three alternatives.
- Compare quality, speed and failure rates side by side.
- Read each provider's data and retention terms.
- Switch one feature first and keep the old API as a fallback.
Do you make a model API? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on leaving or adding to the OpenAI API
Don't switch everything at once. Move one feature, measure it against your own test prompts and keep a fallback in place. Most teams end up using two or three providers, each for the jobs it does best.
Write your prompts so they don't depend on one provider's quirks, and keep them in one place in your code. If you're on Microsoft's cloud, my guide to Azure OpenAI covers another route to the same models.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to the OpenAI API?
It depends on the task. Test two or three alternatives on your own prompts, because each provider is strongest at different jobs.
Is it hard to switch from the OpenAI API?
It's usually manageable. Some providers mention OpenAI compatibility, which can reduce code changes, but you should still test outputs.
Does the OpenAI API train on my data?
OpenAI says API data hasn't been used to train its models since 1 Mar 2023 unless you opt in.
Can I use open-source models instead of the OpenAI API?
Yes. Open-weight models are available through several APIs on this list, or you can host them yourself.
Should I use more than one AI API?
Many businesses do, so they have a backup and can send each task to the model that handles it best.
Is there a free OpenAI API alternative?
Some providers name a free tier for their wider cloud, but most model APIs I read didn't name a free plan.
