StockCake: What It Is, the Licence Terms and the Catches to Know

StockCake is a free stock image site where every picture is generated by AI. Its licence places the images in the public domain under Creative Commons Zero (CC0), so you can use them for personal or commercial work without paying or crediting StockCake. The catch is the other side of that freedom: because the images are AI-made and public domain, you can't stop anyone else, including a competitor, using the same picture.

If you need images for blog posts, social media or slides, StockCake is quick and the terms are generous. But the licence works differently from traditional stock photo sites, and there are a few things its own pages say that you'll want to know before you build a brand on it.

What StockCake is

StockCake's FAQ describes it as a website offering AI-generated images, all in the public domain. It says it aims to generate an image per minute, so the library grows constantly. Alongside the free library, it sells premium AI tools: an editor to generate custom images, background removal, effects, turning images into video and upscaling to 8k.

Small and medium downloads are free. HD and higher resolutions use credits, which come with paid plans.

What the StockCake licence lets you do

The licence page is unusually plain. It says you can:

  • Use images in personal or commercial projects, without distinction.
  • Put them in marketing, ads, websites, blogs, social posts, books, presentations and teaching materials.
  • Print them on posters, t-shirts, mugs and merchandise for sale.
  • Edit, crop, recolour, combine or completely transform them.
  • Use them in client projects without any credit or copyright notice.

Because the images are AI-generated, StockCake says you don't need model releases or photographer permissions, which often complicate traditional image licences.

What you can't do

Public domain doesn't mean no rules on the site. The licence and terms set a few limits:

  1. Don't use the images in offensive, harmful or inappropriate ways.
  2. Don't compile large collections of StockCake images to build a similar or competing AI image service. Small collections for specific projects are fine.
  3. Don't use the images in a way that implies StockCake endorses you, according to section 4.3 of its terms.
  4. Don't use StockCake's own logos and trademarks: it keeps the rights to its brand, software and website.
  5. Think about images that look like real people or sensitive subjects. StockCake says its images don't feature real people, but asks you to consider whether a use could mislead.

This is the part most reviews skip. In January 2025, the US Copyright Office concluded that outputs of generative AI can be protected by copyright only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements, and that simply providing prompts isn't enough. StockCake's images are generated and released with no human authorship claimed, which is why they can be public domain at all.

For a business, that cuts both ways. You can use them freely. But you can't own them either. If you put a StockCake image at the centre of your logo or packaging, you can't register it as your copyright, and nothing stops a rival using the same image tomorrow. The Copyright Office did confirm that a human's creative changes or arrangement can be protected, so heavily editing an image into something new improves your position, though only for the parts you added.

There's also no warranty. StockCake's terms say the service is provided as is, and the licence says it can't guarantee every image suits your use. Under section 9.1 of the terms, you indemnify StockCake, which means if your use causes a legal claim, the responsibility sits with you.

StockCake plans and credits

The free library covers most needs. The paid plans, from $4.99 to start for new customers as of October 2026 according to the home page, are for the AI tools and HD downloads. The FAQ lists monthly credit allowances by plan:

The FAQ adds that annual billing saves 40% compared with monthly, you can cancel any time without fees, and content made on a paid plan can be used commercially. One thing to check yourself: the FAQ says registered users get 50 free credits daily, while the home page talks about free credits every 30 days. Read the current offer before you rely on either.

StockCake pros and cons

ProsCons
Free for commercial use, no credit neededNo exclusivity: anyone can use the same image
CC0 licence, simpler than most stock sitesAI images can't be registered as your copyright
No model or property releases to worry aboutNo warranty, and you carry the legal risk
New images added constantlyAI style can look generic or slightly off

My verdict

StockCake is a handy tool for blog headers, social graphics and slide backgrounds, where you need something decent fast and don't mind others using it too. I wouldn't use it for your logo, your product photos or anything that has to be uniquely yours, and I'd never use an AI image where customers expect to see your real team or premises. Check every image closely before you publish: AI pictures still produce odd hands, strange text and details that don't make sense.

Frequently asked questions

Is StockCake free?

Yes. All the images in its library are free to download and use, and small and medium downloads cost nothing. HD downloads and the premium AI tools use credits from paid plans.

Can I use StockCake images commercially?

Yes. StockCake's licence says its images are public domain under CC0 and can be used in personal and commercial projects, including ads, websites and merchandise for sale.

Do I need to credit StockCake?

No. The licence says you don't need to credit StockCake or include a copyright notice, though it appreciates a mention.

Who owns StockCake images?

Nobody, in practice. They're released into the public domain, and the US Copyright Office has said AI outputs are only protected where a human author determined sufficient expressive elements, not from prompts alone.

Are StockCake images real photos?

No. StockCake says it uses artificial intelligence to generate every image, and that its AI images don't feature real people.
