What Does TS Mean in Texting? The TikTok Meaning, the 'This' Mix-Up and Other Uses

In texting and TikTok comments, TS usually stands for "this sh*t" or "that sh*t", used to add emphasis, as in "ts so funny" or "ts is crazy". The catch is that lots of people now use ts as a jokey stand-in for plain "this", and outside of slang TS has a long list of other meanings, from Taylor Swift to TypeScript.

Few abbreviations have caused as much confusion as TS. Parents see it in their kids' chats, coworkers see it in Slack, and everyone reads it differently. Here's the slang meaning first, then the other uses you're likely to meet.

TS as "this sh*t": the slang meaning

Wiktionary lists lowercase ts as internet slang, an initialism of "this sh*t" and "that sh*t". It works as an emphasis word: "ts hits different" means this thing is great, "ts annoying" means this situation is frustrating. The tone is blunt and casual rather than angry. Slang explainers trace the phrase to African American Vernacular English and says the two letter version exploded on TikTok, X and Instagram in late 2024 and early 2025.

Wiktionary's own usage examples show how it's written: lowercase, no punctuation, often at the very start of a sentence. That's the easiest way to spot the slang version. Capitals usually mean an older or more formal abbreviation, although plenty of people type everything in lowercase anyway.

The ts "this" mix-up on TikTok

This is the part most explainers miss. As ts spread, plenty of people assumed it simply meant "this", and started writing things like "ts cake is so good". Wiktionary now records that use separately, as a proscribed and often ironic alternative form of "this". In other words, people know it's not the original meaning and use it anyway, often as a joke. Some even write "ts (this)" to poke fun at the habit.

So when you see ts, there are two slang readings to hold in mind: the emphasis one with the swear word, and the jokey "this". In practice they often blur together, and most readers won't notice the difference unless the context is sensitive. If you're a parent reading a child's chat, the emphasis meaning is the one to assume.

TS PMO and other TikTok combos

  • TS PMO: "this sh*t is pissing me off", usually comedic frustration under a chaotic video.
  • TS PMO ICL: the same, with "I can't lie" on the end for extra emphasis.
  • TS crazy or TS wild: amazement or disbelief.

If ICL is new to you, here's what ICL means.

On its own, PMO can mean something else entirely, so the combination matters. Stacked after ts, it's the frustration meaning. These combos are mostly used under videos and posts rather than in one to one chats, which is part of why they spread so fast in comment sections.

Talk soon, true story: the polite TS readings

TS isn't always about emphasis. At the very end of a conversation it can be a sign-off meaning "talk soon", much like TTYL. As a one-word reply to a story it can mean "true story". Placement is your best clue: mid-sentence it's emphasis, as a last message it's a goodbye, as a reply it's agreement.

If you can't tell which one you've got, look at what comes before it. "Ok, ts!" after making plans is a goodbye. "ts" alone after a funny story is agreement.

TS outside texting: the meanings that cause mix-ups

Wiktionary also lists TS as an older abbreviation linked to transgender identity. You may see it in some dating or identity contexts, but many people find that term outdated, so don't assume it unless the context is clear.

The quickest way to sort these out is to look at who's writing. A Swiftie fan account means Taylor Swift. A developer channel means TypeScript. A weather app means a tropical storm. A teenager's group chat almost always means the slang.

How to reply when a friend texts TS

These are made-up messages to show how it's used and how you might reply:

  • "ts so funny" under a video you sent: "I know, I've watched it five times."
  • "ts pmo" about a delayed train: "Same, mine's late too."
  • "ok ts" at the end of a chat: "Talk soon!"
  • "ts" when you're not sure: "ts as in this, or something else?"

Asking is fine. Two letters can carry a lot of meanings, and nobody minds a quick check, a bit like replying FR to confirm someone's serious.

What parents should know about TS

If you've spotted ts in your child's messages, the most likely meaning is the emphasis one, and it isn't a sign of anything worrying on its own. It's the same as a teenager saying "this stuff is so good" with a ruder word in the middle. What matters more is the rest of the conversation. If you're unsure, ask them. Most young people are happy to explain slang, and it's a far better conversation starter than guessing. The less common meanings, such as the older identity term, rarely turn up in ordinary friend chats.

Should you use TS at work? My take

No, not at work and not from a business account. The core meaning contains a swear word, and even the "this" use reads as too casual for clients. If you manage a brand's social media, it helps to understand ts so you can read your comments correctly, because "ts so good" under your product is a compliment, not a complaint. Reply in your normal voice rather than copying the slang. With friends, it's fine, and if you like this kind of honest shorthand, NGL is its close relative.
