Free Rubric Generators (2026): 10 Tools for Teachers

A rubric generator builds a marking grid for an assignment: the criteria down one side, the levels of achievement across the top and a short description in every box. Some are classic free rubric makers you fill in by hand, and some use AI to draft the criteria or mark work against your rubric. Ten options follow in no particular order.

A good rubric saves more time than it takes. Students know what you're looking for before they start, and marking gets faster and fairer because every piece is judged against the same descriptions.

Building one from a blank grid is the slow part. The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If marking is the job eating your evenings, my ChatGPT prompts for teachers to save marking time are a useful companion.

Rubric generators side by side

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free or open source. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Keep pupils' names out of the AI

The Department for Education's guidance on generative AI in education says personal data must be protected in line with data protection law, and it recommends that personal data isn't used in generative AI tools at all.

That's easy to follow with rubrics, because a rubric never needs a pupil's name. Generate the criteria and level descriptions from the assignment brief, then do the marking in your own school system. If you use an AI tool to give feedback on student work, check what your school allows and strip names and other details before anything is uploaded.

Grid maker, AI rubric writer or AI marking assistant?

A grid maker gives you a clean template and lets you type every criterion yourself. It's the right choice when you know exactly what you're assessing.

An AI rubric writer drafts the criteria and level descriptions from your assignment, subject and age group. It's fast, but read every box, because vague descriptors are the most common weakness.

An AI marking assistant uses a rubric you already have to suggest grades and feedback. Treat its suggestions as a first pass and keep the final judgement yours.

Six checks before you share a rubric with students

  1. Does each criterion match something the task asks for?
  2. Can a student tell the difference between each level?
  3. Are the descriptions free of words like good, very good and excellent?
  4. Is it short enough to read in a couple of minutes?
  5. Would a colleague mark the same piece the same way with it?
  6. Have you removed any names or personal details from the AI tool?

Signs your rubric needs another draft

  • Two levels sound the same. Make the difference concrete.
  • Students ask what a word means. Use their language.
  • Colleagues mark differently with it. Tighten the descriptions.
  • It doesn't fit on one page. Cut a criterion.

My plain advice on writing a rubric that works

Write the top level first, as a short description of what an excellent answer contains, then work down. Ask an AI tool to draft the other levels if you like, but rewrite every line in words your students use. A rubric they can't understand is just a grading grid for you.

If you're planning the lesson at the same time, my ChatGPT prompts for teachers' lesson plans help you line the task and the rubric up from the start.

Frequently asked questions

What is a rubric generator?

It's a tool that builds a marking grid for an assignment, with criteria, achievement levels and a description in each box.

Are rubric generators free?

Several are free or have a free plan for teachers. Check the free plan column above, then confirm on each vendor's site.

Can AI write a marking rubric?

Yes. AI tools can draft criteria and level descriptions from your assignment, but you should check and rewrite every line.

Should I put students' names into an AI tool?

The Department for Education recommends that personal data isn't used in generative AI tools, so leave names and details out.

How many levels should a rubric have?

Many rubrics use three to five levels. Fewer levels make the differences clearer for students and faster to mark.

Can AI mark work against my rubric?

Some tools suggest grades and feedback based on your rubric. Use them as a first pass and keep the final mark your own.
