A profile picture maker turns a photo into a clean, cropped image for your social accounts, usually by removing the background, adding a colour or design behind you and exporting a square or round crop. Some use templates and others use AI to restyle you. Nine options follow in no particular order.
Your profile picture is the one image people see next to every comment, post and message you send, often at the size of a fingernail.
A profile picture maker helps you get it right in minutes. The nine tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If LinkedIn is the account that matters most, my guide to the LinkedIn profile picture size has the dimensions.

I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website or store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version, a free account, a free edition, an open source release or says the tool itself is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

The square LinkedIn recommends for a logo image
LinkedIn Help recommends a Page logo image of 400 by 400 pixels, with a minimum of 268 by 268, and says all Page images must be PNG or JPEG files with a maximum size of 3MB.
That advice is for business Pages, but it's a useful rule for any profile picture. Make a square file with your face or logo centred and some space around it, and the circle crop most platforms apply won't cut off your chin or your logo's edges.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
AI makeover or a real photo?
AI styles are fun for gaming, Discord and creator accounts where a cartoon or illustrated look fits. They can also make you hard to recognise.
For LinkedIn, client work or anywhere people will meet you on a video call, a real photo with a cleaner background usually works better. People want to recognise the person they're about to talk to.
Whichever you choose, use the same picture across your main accounts so people know they've found the right you.
Questions to ask before you make a new PFP
- Will people recognise you from the picture?
- Does it still read at tiny sizes?
- Is your face or logo centred for a circle crop?
- Is there a watermark on the free download?
- Does the background suit your brand colours?
- Can you use the same image across all your accounts?
Signs it's time for a new profile picture
- The photo is years old. People expect to recognise you.
- Your face is tiny in the frame. Crop in closer.
- The background is busy. Swap it for a plain colour.
- Every account shows a different you. Pick one image.
Do you make a profile picture maker? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on profile pictures
Take a photo in daylight facing a window, crop it so your face fills most of the frame and then let a maker swap the background for a plain colour. That beats any amount of filters.
Then check it at thumbnail size before you upload. The thinking behind a strong headshot is set out in my piece on the ideal headshot.
Frequently asked questions
What is a PFP?
PFP is short for profile picture: the small image shown next to your name on social media, chat apps and forums.
Can I make a profile picture for free?
Yes. Most of the tools above have a free option, though some limit downloads or add a watermark. Check the free plan column and each vendor's page.
What size should a profile picture be?
Make it square and at least a few hundred pixels wide. LinkedIn, for example, recommends 400 by 400 pixels for a Page logo.
Should I use an AI profile picture?
It depends on the account. Stylised AI images suit gaming and creator profiles, while a real photo usually works better for business and job hunting.
Why does my profile picture look blurry?
Usually it was uploaded too small or compressed. Start from a sharp, square original and let the platform shrink it.
Should I use the same profile picture everywhere?
For a personal brand, yes. One recognisable image across your accounts helps people know it's you.
