Facebook Marketplace ads are paid ads you create in Meta Ads Manager that appear on the Marketplace homepage and while people browse Marketplace in the Facebook app. Listing an item for sale isn't the same thing: an ad is something you pay for, set a budget on and choose a placement for. Meta recommends Advantage+ placements, which include Marketplace when your settings are compatible.
Here's the catch: Meta says it isn't currently possible for an ad to show only in Marketplace. Ads in Marketplace also show in Feed. So if you were hoping for a Marketplace-only campaign, the closest you'll get is a placement mix that includes it.
Two ways to get paid visibility on Marketplace
| Ads in Marketplace | Boosted Marketplace listing | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | Businesses advertising products or services | Anyone selling an item on Marketplace |
| Where you set it up | Meta Ads Manager | Marketplace, under Your account |
| Creative | Your own ad creative | Your listing's photos, title, price and description, used automatically |
| Where it shows | Marketplace plus other compatible placements, always including Feed | Facebook Feed, Facebook search, Marketplace search and Marketplace product pages |
| Audience | You set it in the ad set | Local listings are fixed to adults within 40 miles; you choose the audience for shipped items |
Meta notes that boosted listings may not be available to everyone yet.
How to create an ad for Marketplace
- Open Meta Ads Manager and create a campaign with one of the supported objectives: Awareness, Engagement, Traffic, Leads or Sales.
- Set your budget and audience at the ad set level.
- Under placements, keep Advantage+ placements, or choose manual placements and make sure Facebook Marketplace is ticked along with Feed.
- Build your ad. People who see it can click through to your website or app, or view details in Marketplace.
- Check the preview, publish and follow Meta's Advertising Standards, which all ads in Marketplace must meet.
Why your ad may look different from the preview
Ads Manager previews the half-width version, but Meta may show your ad edge to edge in the mobile browse feed when it expects better performance. Your images, description and call to action stay the same either way:
| Format | Half-width (shown in preview) | Edge-to-edge (mobile only) |
|---|---|---|
| Single image or video | Half the screen width, full image with top and bottom bars | Full screen width |
| Carousel | One image at a time with swipe dots | Two images, no swiping |
| Collection | 3 tile images | 4 tile images |
How to boost a Marketplace listing
- Go to Marketplace and select Your account.
- Under Your listings, find the item and select Boost listing.
- Choose the recommended budget and duration, or a custom one. Meta sets a minimum daily spend.
- For shipped items, choose or create an audience. Local listings use the fixed 40-mile adult audience.
- Check your payment method, ad preview and payment summary, then select Promote now.
You can also boost straight after you publish a listing. If you're new to selling there, my guide on how Facebook Marketplace shipping works explains the shipped versus local split that changes your boost options.
What Meta says boosting a listing does
- Wider reach: your item shows beyond the Marketplace feed, in Facebook Feed, Facebook search, Marketplace search and Marketplace product pages.
- Messages or sales: buyers can message you through Messenger, and shipped items can be optimised further for sales.
- A ready-made audience: nearby adults for local items, or an audience you choose for shipped ones.
- No new creative: the boost uses the photos, title, price and description already in your listing.
Boosted listings still have to meet Meta's Advertising Standards. In countries with an enforcement process for ads about politics or social issues, Meta says boosted listings won't be eligible to run.
What to measure
For a boosted listing, open View insights from the listing's Options menu. Local items show messaging conversations started and cost per conversation. Shipped items show checkouts initiated and cost per checkout. Ads Manager adds frequency, link clicks and impressions. For full Marketplace ad campaigns, use your normal Ads Manager reporting with a placement breakdown so you can see how Marketplace performed against Feed.
If you sell second-hand clothes, this list of places to sell clothes looks at other sites worth a try.

My verdict
If you're a business, don't chase a Marketplace-only campaign: run Advantage+ placements, check the placement breakdown, and keep creative that reads well at half width. If you're selling one item, boosting the listing is simpler and reuses what you've already written. Either way, Marketplace shoppers are in buying mode, so lead with the product and the price. Frequently asked questions
Can I run ads only on Facebook Marketplace?
No. Meta says it isn't currently possible for an ad to show only in Marketplace, and ads in Marketplace also show in Feed.
What objectives can I use for Marketplace ads?
Meta lists Awareness, Engagement, Traffic, Leads and Sales as the objectives for ads in Marketplace.
Is boosting a Marketplace listing the same as a Marketplace ad?
Not quite. A boosted listing turns your item listing into a Facebook ad using its own photos and details, while Marketplace ads are built in Ads Manager with your own creative.
Who sees a boosted local Marketplace listing?
Meta says the audience for a local listing is fixed to adults who are within 40 miles of the listing's location.
Why does my Marketplace ad look bigger than the preview?
Meta may show ads edge to edge in the mobile Marketplace browse feed when it believes that could improve performance. The preview only shows the half-width format.
