The X Handle Marketplace is where eligible subscribers can request handles that are no longer active on X. You need X Premium+ for a personal account, or Premium Business Full Access or Premium Organizations for a business, plus an account older than 3 months. You don't buy the handle outright: X gives you a limited, revocable licence and can reclaim it.
That licence point is the part that's easy to miss, and it shapes everything else about the Handle Marketplace. Here's how X's own help page says it works: who qualifies, how to request a handle, when a transfer fee applies, and the rules that let X take a handle back.
Who can use the X Handle Marketplace
X says your account must be in good standing, public and compliant with its User Agreement. On top of that:
| Requirement | What X asks for |
|---|---|
| Personal accounts | An active Premium+ subscription |
| Business or organisation accounts | Active Premium Business Full Access or Premium Organizations |
| X Subscription plans | Premium, Super or Ultra plans also qualify |
| Account age | Older than 3 months |
| Authenticity | Clear signs of ongoing, original content creation, not just reposts or promotion |
If you're weighing up whether a higher tier is worth it for this alone, my rundown of X Premium features sets out what else you get. Failing the eligibility rules can mean a denied request or a reclaimed handle, and X says there's no refund except where the law requires one.
How to request a handle
- Log in to the X account you want the handle on.
- Go to handles.x.com, or click the Request an inactive handle tab in Premium Hub.
- Search for available handles from that same account.
- Request the one you want.
- Accept the X Handle Marketplace Terms.
For some handles you'll also be asked for a transfer fee and an explanation of why you want it, and some requests trigger a short ID verification. X says most requests take at least 7 days for a decision, and longer when volumes are high. Requests have to come from the account that will use the handle: you can't request one for a different account.
Free handles vs handles with a transfer price
| Type of handle | How you get it |
|---|---|
| Many firstname-lastname or multi-word business names | Can come as a perk of an eligible subscription |
| Invite-only handles with higher commercial value | A transfer price set by X, which varies by handle |
X says the transfer price depends on commercial value, rarity, demand and market dynamics, and that typical fees may start in the five-figure region in US dollars and run into seven figures. All payments are final and non-refundable, and taxes may apply. This isn't a cheap route to a short name; for most people the value is in the free-perk handles.
Why a request gets turned down
- You don't have the right Premium tier.
- Policy violations or impersonation concerns.
- The handle is unavailable or reserved for other purposes.
- Several eligible users requested it, and X prioritised a more active one.
If a handle you want shows as unavailable, it may still belong to an active user, be excluded under X's policy or be under review. For some, you can use the Register your interest option, and X will try to tell you if it becomes available. Turn on email notifications in your settings so you see that message.
The rules for keeping your handle
This is where the licence matters. Once a handle moves to your account, X expects you to:
- Create content regularly. An active account whose handle stays largely dormant can lose it.
- Take part in the platform: replying, reposting and joining conversations.
- Log in on at least 1 device within every 30-day period.
- Follow X's Rules, Terms of Service, Purchaser Terms and the Handle Marketplace Terms.
- Keep your subscription if you didn't pay a transfer price. If it lapses, you have 30 days to reinstate it before X reclaims the handle.
If you did pay a transfer price, X says you only need the right subscription at the moment you pay, not afterwards. Either way, X owns every handle and says it can reclaim one at any time, for any reason or none, as set out in its Terms.

What happens to your account when the handle switches
X moves your account to the new handle and keeps your followers, posts, DMs and settings. Your old handle is frozen for a period so nobody else can take it. X's advice is to post an announcement, update your bio and watch for impersonators, because old tags and links can break. My guide to changing your name on X covers the display name, which is separate from the handle.
| Limit | X's rule |
|---|---|
| How often you can transfer | Once every six months per account |
| Changing handle again later | X reclaims the Marketplace handle you'd received |
| Selling or passing it on | Not allowed: X can reclaim it and suspend the accounts involved |
| Going back to your old handle | Contact support at handles.x.com; X reclaims the Marketplace one |
My verdict
The Handle Marketplace is worth a look if you already pay for Premium+ or Premium Business and your name is stuck on a dead account, because many name handles come as a perk. Go in knowing it's a licence, not ownership: post regularly, log in every month and keep the subscription, or X can take the handle back. For a business, check the Premium Business subscription first, since that's the tier X asks for.
Frequently asked questions
What is the X Handle Marketplace?
It's X's service for eligible subscribers to request handles that are no longer active on the platform. Approved users get a limited, revocable, non-transferable licence to use the handle.
Do you need X Premium to request a handle?
Yes. Personal accounts need Premium+, and business or organisation accounts need Premium Business Full Access or Premium Organizations. Premium, Super or Ultra plans on The X Subscription also qualify.
How long does an X handle request take?
X says most requests need at least 7 days for a decision, and response times can vary with volume.
Can X take back a handle from the Handle Marketplace?
Yes. X owns all handles and can reclaim one if you stop posting, don't log in at least once in 30 days, let a required subscription lapse or break its rules.
Can I sell a handle I got from X?
No. X says the licence is non-transferable, and trying to sell or transfer it can lead to the handle being reclaimed and the accounts involved being suspended.
